Dodgy Framerate

Hi all, I'm new to this forum so Hi!

Anyways, I'll get straight to the point... I have just got a new PC, its been perfect so far; really fast and a pleasure to use 🙂 Its 1700XP+, 256 DDR, GeForce 4 440MX and other pretty nice components. So in theory it should run games really nicely, which it does, kinda.

RTCW is one of the main offenders. It runs at about 60FPS, but sorta skips every half second or so. Its not like a skip when its accesses the HD, more like it refreshes wrongly. Its quite annoying; if you pan around its really smooth, but then it "skips" a bit. Same problem in MOHAA too :-(

I run both these games at full quality, but even if I turn them down to the worst they still skip.

Anyone know the problem/solution?

Cheers!

If you're using a VIA motherboard (which you probably are) have you installed the newest 4-in-1 drivers? Not installing the 4-in-1 drivers is the cause of bad performance of most Athlon systems.

RTCW...MOHAA

What game settings are you running these games under?

Both of these games utilise a lot of high resolution textures which can easily chew up 64 MB boards (like yours) if the details levels are turned up too high. This causes stuttering from texture swaps, which is caused by the video card having to go to the main RAM to fetch textures because there's no room to store them in the VRAM.

Turn down your game resolution and enable texture compression.

Thanks guys 🙂

I am getting that 4in1 driver now... fingers x.

BFG10K, I run the games at full res and detail, but even if I turn the quality right down it still skips to an extent. Oh and I have the newest detonator and agp drivers.
