Dodge is telling dealers to stop selling the redesigned 2004 Dodge Durango because the throttle is liable to stick in the open position, resulting in a "crash without warning."

An estimated 21,000 vehicles are affected, the company said in a written communication to dealers. The vehicles affected are equipped with a 3.7-liter V-6 or 4.7-liter V-8.

The stop order does not include Durangos equipped with Dodge's 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi engine.

The company began building the redesigned 2004 model in September 2003.

"Water may enter into the throttle cable housing on about 21,000 of the vehicles," the written notice said. "If the vehicle is subjected to freezing temperatures, this could cause the throttle to stick in the open position and result in a crash without warning."

The stop sale order requires dealers to install a revised throttle control cable.

Most of the affected vehicles remain in dealer inventory, the company's notice said. Dealers are contacting any customers who have taken delivery of an affected vehicle.

What a sneaky @ss way of making you buy a Hemi. 😉

Viper > Cobra
SRT-10 > Lightning (It's a freakin' automatic!!"
SRT-4 Not in same class as GT, but smokes it and costs less to insure.

Ford GT > Viper
Lightning > SRT-10 (L handles better, not far behind in the 0-60, and cost $17,000 less, oh and it also tows more)
Cobra > SRT anything else Dodge has
If you ever admit to buying an Neon, you should be shot.

I would stay away from the Durango just because of the front suspension. I bet money that there will recalls in the future on it. I know people who were on design teams for it and they are afraid of it :Q

I heard the same thing. But I thought it had to do with the previous Durango and Dakota.....not the '04.

Well I heard They STILL havent put Lube fittings un the Upper Ball joints.

Never buy a first year car, unless you are prepared for the headaches of a new model teething pains. Of course, there are some models that just suck, period, and will provide you with nothing but trouble regardless of what model year you purchase (*cough*GM!!*cough*)....

HUH?????????

avalanche 02' NO recalls. first year.

FANBOI at its worst.

and you say gm, dodge, has a MUCH worse reliability rate. well their trannys were once the worst ever created!

yea, hmm decent gm vehicles.....

ALL full size trucks, any version of them.

avalanche/excalade.

almost every SUV they make.

vans (not going there)

cars, impala was nice, others werent so good

corvette.

(we are talking like 99'+)

MIKE

I only mentioned GM because of that recent massive recall....no fanboi here, I guess I should have included Chrysler, Ford in the same cough. And yes, like others have mentioned, the Avalanche came out in 2002...I would HOPE 2 years later there would be no recalls
To put an end to a stupid technicality the TWO THOUSAND TWO AVALANCHE had ZERO RECALLS. It's based on the 1999 truck (the one I have), with ZERO RECALLS also.

Auto's are better in full size trucks. But what do I know, I've only been driving and working on trucks all my life. And my truck was the fastest gas powerd 4x4 at Cummins Truckfest 3 years in a row. Meh 😛

Don't know why he mentioned Cobra, but GT >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Viper by a long shot

Thought he meant stang GT. I hear ya but look at the price tag/practicality. Plus, IMHO the GT is fuggggly.

Viper > Cobra R, if your talkin about competing cars. Yes, price is dif, but not as ridiculousy dif than that of the GT to Viper.

Yeah and neither of those are 4x4's....

After driving both, SRT is waaayyyy nicer and is much more responsive. Plus, what the hell is the point of having a fast vehicle if it aint a stick... that's like buying a goddamn automatic corvette... a shame...

I'm gonna raise the BS flag on you driving a SRT-10, sorry but without pics I don't buy it for a second.

LOL, the point is they are stronger and faster in the 1/4 mile, the only track a truck is good at.

Yah but your Dodge opinion is like Kami's LoTR opinion, Dodge could sell poop and you would buy it 😛 oh wait 45RFE, they do sell poop 😛

Not to mention the other badarse rides Chrysler has/is puttin out like the 300C... now that's a ride... All I know is I'd buy the Durango over anything else in it's class. It's a pretty nice ride.... thought the front end was ugly at first but grew to like it.

Looks like it's time to switch to eletronic throttle bodies!

GM went to drive by wire on the 2000 trucks... I'm actually glad I have linkage (1999) in a way since I had to relocate the TB for my supercharger 😉 But yah, I'm suprized with a remodel in todays age they didn't go DBW. They are prolly still using the old ODBII interface instead of jumping on J2284 also.

At least since they stopped the sales of the new (fugly) Doorango, those damned annoying commercials for it are gone too 🙂

Out of date I know but I just bought a used 2004 Dodge Durango SLT 4.7L. WOT on highway to run fuel injector cleaner through induction. Stuck at WOT. Stomped on brakes and had to apply emergency Brake.Shifted to nuetral and engine over-reved like it was going to blow (No rev limiter I guess). Was afraid to shut off key while moving as afraid steering wheel would lock in nuetral.

The link to the recall no longer takes you there.

Jiggled throttle cables under hood until gas pedal came back up. Scarey.

Can you say "necro-max"...?

Why not start a NEW thread in ATG (unless...?)
