I am looking at a 2006, ST. its about as basic as you can get, power nothing. 4.7l v-8, Reg Cab auto. Has 75k miles on it. Runs and drives good. Having our mechanic look at it Monday. Any big issues that anyone knows about? will probably put less than 5k miles a year on it.

I have a dodge 1500 slt quad cab with the same motor . I love mine . It has 106,000 on the clock now . No big issues to report . Mine had the in dash blower doors fail at 80 K,needed a new radiator at 90k . I use mobile 1 5w 30 with either a mopar filter or a mobile one filter . I also have the trans serviced the proper way every 30 k and have the spark plugs changed at the same time . Redo the coolant every three years and redo the rear end lube every 30k . I did the power steering fluid myself with a turkey baster . That little v8 has plenty of power for me , I've towed boats , but mostly a utility trailer with a garden tractor on it . Gas mileage is what you would expect from a real truck . The 2006 will be better than a 2004 mileage wise . When I said a transmission serviced the proper way , I mean on a lift with the filter removed and replaced , NOT a flush .

Sludge and that for a few years, every time I heard someone talk of a Dodge in the shop needing a new engine it involved a 4.7.
A sea of dead Durangos.

However, I haven't heard anything recently

The rear diff in my friend's 2005ish 5.7 grenaded a rear diff a few years ago...probably just a fluke. That's all I got LOL.

dodge had a small oil pickup tube that they replaced with a larger one . . Ended oil sludge problems

What year did they make the change?
After seeing this thread I did the standard 5 minute google search and I saw stuff about thin cylinder walls causing abnormal heat patterns to the need to be religious with maintenance on the 4.7

Like I said its been a few years since I heard anything (mechanic friends\friends that own them) so I have a fair share of "I vaguely recall".

Well is doesn't sound there are huge common problems. I see what the mechanic has to say about it.
