Documents, printers and margins

Would you expect a document (let's say a Word document) to retain printer-specific settings with regard to its margins regardless of the machine it is being viewed on?

I came across something odd on a customer's computer today. It's not specific to a particular application (I saw the problem in MS Works and LibreOffice).

Say for example I set up a spreadsheet with 0.5cm margins on each side, draw a bordered grid on it, then maximise the column widths to the point that they use up the whole width of the page. On the customer's machine there's still approximately a 1.5cm gap on the right side of the page (landscape or portrait) regardless of the document's margin setting.

If I send that document to another computer, I see the same problem.

If I set up the spreadsheet again on another computer (same app), it doesn't have the problem.

Admittedly the problem may become a moot point very shortly as we need to replace the printer, but it's a very odd problem and I wondered if any of you had any ideas. I checked through the computer's printer driver settings and I couldn't see anything suggestive. The printer is a Canon MG8150.

I just had similar problem. excel was trying to be smart and it wasnt. i had to specify the paper size in the printer settings and also in excel. once they both matched it started working.

Hope that helps.

Is this a document that is just viewed, or needs the capabiltiy to be updated? If it is just a viewed document, I'd export the distribution document to PDF and then send it to the customer.

Sorry, I only just noticed that people responded to this.

Steltek, the documents in question were for internal use only really, so yes they would get updated.

DigitalCoke, the paper sizes matched in the printer driver and the spreadsheet in my case.

Charlie98, perhaps it's just Canons that are a bit bizarre then?

Since replacing that Canon the problem hasn't reoccurred, apart from some teething issues related to trying to get things working with odd settings specifically for the Canon.
