Documentary on 'neo-nazis' in Russia

In light of today's killings, the following documentary seems more relevant and menacing.

It's from Current TV - Al Gore's channel, on cable systems (I only recently discovered it I'm sorry to say), the place Keith Olbermann went.

It's from a documentary series called 'Vanguard' that is quite good IMO.

This is a 20 minute episode on the well organized and threatening anti-immigrant movement.

The video is a few years old, but fairly accurately depicts what was going on. I'm on the 7th minute, and will try to watch the rest by tonight.

Not sure if the makers of the video will bring up this point or if they realized it themselves: none of the ultra-right groups can muster the courage to attack the real crime perpetrators. They beat up and terrify the lowest on the totem pole of migrants - the undocumented illegals and foreign students.

It is true, that migrants from the Caucus and Central Asia are heavily involved in drug trafficking, slavery and prostitution. Students from Vietnam and Africa who form their own communities around the universities they study or underground Chinatowns also push drugs and organize brothels, but on a much smaller scale.

Chechen diaspora is the most troublesome, the most powerful, and very well protected. It, in turn, harasses and attacks the Russian middle-class and lower-class population at the indifference of corrupt police who is on their ticket anyway, or will not act out of fear of reprisals from the powerful Chechen overlords who are in bed with the top brass in Moscow and elsewhere.

Who gets the shaft? Undocumented construction workers, farmer market sellers, foreign students and other small fish who have nothing to do with this anyway, but cannot get protection or stand up for themselves. That's who you see in all those videos.

Has the situation gotten any better? No. Russia's political elite is unwilling to resolve the immigration problem, and is so deeply permeated by Chechen diaspora, it's hard to tell who's really in charge. Case in point - Surkov, Putin's right hand.

A couple more points: in 2010 NSO was banned in Russia, and quite a few of its members were arrested, tried and convicted for murder, hate speech, extortion and other charges. Currently serving various sentences.

At 15:30 they show Tesak. Shortly after this video was made Tesak appeared in a club where a political forum was held where interrupted the talks with Heil Hitler and other nazi propaganda. Subsequently he was arrested and convicted for hate speech, recently finished serving three and a half years in prison.

Edit: I see they covered this.

I'm surprised a few no-name Americans were able to get into the training camp, or that the ultra-right were even willing to talk to them. To a typical Russian skinhead, an American would be a 'pindos' - somewhat better than a colored migrant, but not worthy of talking to or establishing a friendly relationship with.

Thanks for the replies Paulney.

I'd think the journalists would be pretty worried that torturing/killing them would be tempting from a group like this that had them in some secret location unprotected.

Other episodes of Vanguard have them infiltrating dangerous groups as well.

Craig, I was intrigued by your reference to Norway. Curiously enough, earlier this year, a Russian nationalist and a former MMA fighter, Vyatcheslav Datsik escaped from low-security mental hospital and crossed the border into Norway.

He was apprehended there, and subsequently applied for refugee status. In March 2011 he was extradited back to Russia.

A short wiki about him:

Their grandparents must be turning in their graves. What a shame for a country that defeated most of the Nazi forces.
