I like the trailer Like the visuals. Like Cumberbatch, etc. Know absolutely nothing about the character.

Is his character from a different dimension than the normal Marvel characters?

Not really, I think? AFAIK, he's a sorcerer dude that obtained special sorcerer powers through self-learning and, I guess, some sort of training from masters. From what I remember, he has been around long enough and dabbling in various demon dimensions with their own sort of relics and rules that I guess you could argue that he's as equal a part of some other dimension as he is the earth dimension. But he is a human and frequently works with the fantastic four and avengers, as well as hob-knobs with surfer, thanos, warlock, galactus, mephisto and loki and the like.

As mentioned before, he's a crucial element in the Infinity Gauntlet stories: you basically have useless fodder: the avengers, spiderman, x-men--silly earth-bound humans; and the real celestial beings that actually can stop Thanos: Surfer, Warlock, Galactus--Surfer and Warlock bring Strange along as part of their group because he can easily travel from dimension to dimension and acts as an effective proxy/diplomat between the celestial badasses and the puny humans.

The trailer looks good. Another origin story. Maybe someday they will trust the audience to accept a hero without spending an entire first movie introducing them.

Marvel hasn't really misfired yet. I am sure it is coming, but they are about as sure a bet as you will get in Hollywood when launching a new character on the big screen.

I was watching Jessica Jones last night and in Ep3
it is obvious it is time for the origin story but instead we get 'yeah, some people in this world have powers, so what'
and it was perfect.
I didn't really need to know much more about her to accept her and her powers. Because of the casual way the other character accepted that answer it just worked. He asks 'born with it?' she says 'Accident' he nods his head in understanding. This is just the sort of thing that happens in this world.

Majority I know about him is from limited appearances on the spidey cartoon, but visuals of the movie look very compelling to watch.

Same universe as most Marvel Characters. Sorcery vs mutant/science/alien powers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Strange

Dr. Stephen Strange is a brilliant but egotistical doctor who only cares about wealth from his career. However, a car accident shatters the bones in his hands. The damage effectively ends his ability to conduct surgery, since his hands now tremble uncontrollably. Too proud to take on a teaching job, Strange desperately searches for a way to restore his hands, consulting doctors, homeopathic treatments, and traveling around the world to remote regions for exotic cures, to no avail.[citation needed]

After he exhausts his funds, he becomes homeless, forcing him to perform "back alley" medical procedures for cash.[citation needed] Depressed and still searching, Strange locates a hermit called the Ancient One (who is actually the Earth's Sorcerer Supreme) in the Himalayas....

The thing about Dr. Strange is that he is way OP. Plus he ends up playing the deus ex machina far too often.

Considering the whole franchise is leading up to a villain who has universe destroying power, there really isn't any other option than to introduce an OP hero.

I think they are framing it like Strange's power comes at a physical cost, so he might not be as OP in the MCU, unless he is willing to sacrifice himself.

Didn't they offer him a deal during Civil War because he was too powerful to push around into registering for the stupid hero law or whatever?

IIRC, it was because of his status of sorcerer supreme. In short whoever he decide to side with will win because of his power and thus he is not allow to intervene even if he want to.

Well that makes no sense. He could do whatever he wants, who's going to stop him? :D

More OP than Vision?
Strange is massively, drastically, more powerful than Vision. My prediction: Vision is going to get shit canned soon. I think Scarlet Witch does it? I have not read comics in a looong time.

Adam Warlock, Silver Surfer, and Dr. Strange are some of the biggest guns the heroes have against Thanos. again been a long time but iirc, that is the lay of the proverbial land.

That's because in Luke Cage,
Luke's bulletproof superpowers were the result of a medical experiment, similar to Captain America's. Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider. Thor is from another world & has built-in superpowers. Ironman has none, he's just smart & rich enough to build his own super-suit. So there's not only a variety of backgrounds, but also classifications. Whereas Thor is an A-list superhero, Jessica Jones is like a B-list...strong, but not invincible, and limited in what she can actually do.

I hope they make it a bit more dark. I like the actress who plays the bald woman. She played the angel in Constantine. So far, all movies i have seen with her in it, are good movies. And i think Benedict Cumberbatch would play a good Dr Strange.
Tilda Swinton (spelling?) is an excellent actress.

Edit lulz just saw my post from a few month back saying something similar.

I actually like the skyfather+ realm that marvel has, there's lots of untapped stories there. It makes me sad when I see people comment things like, 'spiderman is one of the strongest marvel super heroes!!!'. Cosmic cubes, celestials, watchers, pheonix force, etc... knowing about that really helps you appreciate the power level world breaker hulk achieved (stomping ZOM, stalemating sentinel before becoming even more powerful, etc).

I just read a an old comic a few days ago about Spiderman tracking down the Hulk as a test to join the Avengers. In that comic, the Hulk does not reach his full strength till minutes after he has changed. So it was possible for Spiderman to get the Hulk knocked out with one blow. Of course, after the Hulk became conscious again, he had his full strength and Spiderman was no longer any match.
It sure is fun to read old comics that i never read before.

Only the (comic version ) Juggernaut is a match for the Hulk. Not the one from the third xmen movie. That is a nut and the juggernaut carried within him an enchanted stone that gave him his strength. It was not a mutant power.
