PORTLAND, Ore. - Just months into Washington's strict new smoking law, Oregon is moving to put its own on the ballot next year. However, there is another anti-smoking movement brewing behind the scenes, with the potential to reach much further into people's private lives.

The movement is to make smoking around kids a form of child abuse. The crime would include smoking while you are pregnant, smoking around kids inside your home and smoking inside a vehicle with kids inside.

Wow, no dissenting opinions!

I also agree that it is child abuse, and it simply amazes me to see friends who have an asthmatic child puffing like a chimney and then wonder why they have to take the kid to the hospital once or twice a month to get medicated. Go figure.

Why don't they just ban poor people from having kids. Isn't raising a kid in poverty child abuse too?

More lives are ruined from poverty than smoking.

Most lives are ruined from poverty than smoking.

Yes, only allow the rich to have children, we'll build a master race.

Lives may be ruined by poverty, but that is an unfortunate fact of life and cannot always be avoided. Preventing children's exposure to cigarette smoke is able to be done, so why not do it for their life-long health.

Who said anything about only rich should have kids? Put words in people's mouth much?

How about only allowing people who can afford to put a roof over their head? Or only people who can afford a neighborhood that isn't run by gangbangers? Or only people that can afford clothing not from thrift shops?

And you know who those gangbangers are? Former children of poverty.

The children of poverty are first victimized by poverty, then when grown, become victimizers. An endless and deadly cycle.

That's a great idea...while we're at it, let;s make it child endangerment to speed while your kids are in the car...or felony endangerment to drive while under the influence,...You can take this kind of "protect the kids" crap way too far...NO, I don't think smoking is healthy for kids, nor for adults...Hell, let's just make tobacco completely illegal in this country. NO OTHER product that has been linked to so many diseases and cancers is legal in this country...The tobacco lobby is a strong one...they can keep a product legal that is a known carcinogen and killer...

wth is wrong with smoking
second-hand smoke doesn't do anything
boo hoo it smells bad

my dad smoked and I'm actually in great health

<-----------Smoker

And I agree with this. Nobody should smoke indoors or in the car around a child. Even though I smoke, my kids never had to endure it, because I always step outside, never smoking in the house or cars. Hell, I won't even smoke next to non smokers outside. I always go off by myself.
