DOA: did i just get a defective Prescott ??

i just picked up a retail 2.8e for 200 bucks
and i couldn't get the thing stable at all

it wouldn't run at it's default settings
i tryed voltages up to 1.5v and speeds down to 1.8ghz 133mhz fsb and everything
but the thing just kept rebooting itself at any setting

i couldn't even get memtest86 to load

it would boot into windows but would reboot within 5 seconds or so


anyone know why it is doing this ??

i just noticed they had a new v14 for my max3
it just came out on the 27th last month

maybe that'll fix my problems

v14 is great for northwoods, not prescotts

i just updated my bios to the latest
and i still get the same issue with this prescott
so it don't look like a bios issue (as i was hoping
i updated, cleared the cmos, and even removed the battery and psu cable

this ain't looking good

i figure it is one of three issues:
the cpu is defective (doa) just got it today
the cpu don't like my motherboard
or i am missing something here

anyone have similar problems with a prescott ?

Turn off "automatic reboot on error" in windows. If that doesn't help you better check your PSU. I had the same problem and I thought it was the CPU, then I thought it was Windows, then I thought it was the power spikes. And then one day... my PSU BURNED taking everything with it. So check your PSU. Better safe than sorry. Faulty PSU, even an expensive one, may cost you more than you bargained for.

yeah my 1.8 p4m works fine running at 2.7ghz on this board/setup (see sig)
but this brand new 2.8e won't even run at 1.8ghz

it just reboots everytime
won't even load memtest86 all the way !!

but the systems is and has been stable with the P4m for quite some time

i'm really thinking this cpu is defective
there's no excuse for this


unless someone has any ideas? i'm just gonna RMA it back to newegg because it appears to be DOA

Well, you see, my system had been rock stable with a 2000+ and when I switched to 3000+ the PSU died in agony... So - check PSU...

If the system boots to windows, the cpu is not DOA, How are you cooling the NB, and CPU? Hows your case temp, and cpu temp? As stated above, it can Certainly be the PSU, as the Prescott uses a Ton more juice than any of the earlier chips.

Prescott E's have been hell for a lot of 875P boards purchased before August. It may have something to do with your North Bridge's revision. What revision is it?

I ran two different Presscotts on my Max3 without issue, BUT I was water cooling.
They ran so hot on my board I sold them. I wasn't comfortable at all using them.
If you're booting then hanging or rebooting, try reinstalling the cpu to make sure that it is being cooled well.
And yes you need BIOS v14 to get them to work.

My system

I also had a 430W Antec True power in the system. It became hot while running benchmarks with a gig of memory and a 9800 Pro.
The system was pulling to many watts for the 430! I replaced it with a 550 and the overheating issue with the powersupply went away.

If you're going to run a 478 Prescott, you have to have
1. Good cooling, A very good HSF or better
2. Great power supply

yeah that is one thing that could be happening

i got the sp-94 with the most powerfull fan they sell
temps were about 50c

i could leave the thing in the bios all day and it wouldn't reboot
it just rebooted everytime i entered windows
or everytime i tryed to boot a memtest86 cd
i tryed the latest bios but got no luck

and am about to ship the processor back to newegg now unless anyone thinks it isn't a DOA prescott ??

ok i just order the "replacement"
got a 2.8e oem this time because i heard people were getting good results with the d0 stepping that just got in stock

geez they are prob gonna charge me a restocking fee
i didn't think about that when i asked to guy if i could just get the oem

Call back and tell them about the situation and ask if they'll wave the restocking fee.

newegg is cool
i got my monitor and cpu the day after they shipped it (ordered friday shipped monday and got it tuesday)
usually it takes 2 or 3 week days

Anything that you start running that will make the CPU workout will make it draw more power. Saw this happen on some older IBM PCs at work. They would boot to BIOS or DOS and run all day but as soon as you put a load on it (like starting Windows) the PC would reboot. Turned out the caps were swollen and leaking which kept the CPU from getting enough power. Might want to check the caps on your MB just to be sure since the Prescotts are power hungry.

yeah that's a good idea too

but i would think my P4m 1.8 @ 2.7ghz with over 1.7v would take more power than a prescott at 1.8ghz with 1.32v and that wasn't stable

if this new prescott i got coming in the mail still don't work then it might just be the motherboard or something

i should get the processor on friday or so
i'll let ya all know how it goes

judging from the posts on the newegg review section it seems that i am not the only one with this problem
a few others said they got a doa prescott too
