I swear, the lady next door is a little ana|. It was 9:45 PM tonight, and I am watching a DivX with my new stereo system hooked up. Sure it's loud, but it's not that loud. Kinda like the same sound level as in the movies, a little lower maybe. It was an action movie. Anyways, it was on for about 10 minutes, and then she knocks on my door. I mean WTF, it's friday night, I worked hard all week, so I want to watch a movie. But she is all distraught and stuff, whining that it's too loud. Well, what kind of rights do I have as a tenant to enjoy a movie on a friday night without having the neighbors spoil it by knocking on my door and lecturing me? It's ridiculous.

Are we talking house or apartment?

Speaking from experience, even low bass levels from music/movies can be like torture, particularly when you can actually "feel" them and you have no idea in what context they're being used (i.e. the rest of the sound)

I'd say your rights are fairly slim, but I agree, that sucks.

I am in an apartment, I have two neighbors on left and right. One never complains (although I wouldn't mind if she came over and spanked me :D)
The other one never complained either until today, (I've been here 2 months) But all of the sudden today she comes over and says it wasn't the first time I was too loud. Hey, if she told me last time, I would keep it down now. Don't blame me for your complexes.
The base was on, but not too much. My sub can only do like 100 watts, and it's not even all the way on. I got the kenwood HTB504 system at fry's a couple weeks ago, thought I could enjoy it, but no, there is always a party pooper. :(

I live on the outside wall of our apartment so noone complains about me (and I don't have my music loud ever...) but my roommate had a movie up and *I* got bitched at, and we were wrestling in the living room and they pounded on our floor/their roof for us to shut up.

Dude, you live in an apartment. apartment = you shouldn't have a stereo that can put out any bass at all.

I've lived in many apartments and there is nothing worse than having to listen to your neighbor's noise.

I guess that's true. I lived in college town before I moved here. Noone ever complained about noise on a friday night. I guess when you move to normal city, things are different :( Gotta go back to school then :)

Back in the day, we had a very nosey neighbor. She'd always look out the windows and spy on us. Even when we were in our house! :Q:| It wasn't cool at all. So glad we movied!!

i was watching a movie that I could hardly hear from where I was sittnig and the neighbor comes and asks us to turn it down. =( Also one time the neighbors banged on their roof, our floor, I guess we were making a little bit of noise. :Q Over all the Apt where I live is not that bad about complaining because it is all college students.

Some people have way too high expectations. I don't expect my neighbors to put up with floorshaking base. But they shouldn't expect to not hear anything. If you want to not hear anything, get a house. You get an apt, you are gonna hear some noise. I don't go outside and beat up the kids who make noise in the morning. I deal with it. So if I want to watch a movie, she should deal with it.

Agreed.

Fortunately, I live in a 1500 sq. foot apartment taking up half of the second story of 2 downtown businees. The only other apartment on the second floor is a frat annex. (I recently graduated but am still in the same town) Now, it can suck sometimes if you are trying to sleep on a fri/sat night, because there's always parties. However, after the stores close on the first floor, I can literally crank it as loud as I want. Even when they are open they dont bitch, one business is a porn store and the other business is a tatoo parlor that plays metallica all day. Its actually better here than the college house I was in because no one EVER complains about noise. I love it.

My neighbors sometimes do.

When we think that they're loud, we blast our audio system... I believe we have like 1 kilowatt of sub power in our living room.

I play my movies real loud, but luckily for me, on either side of my living room it's either the elevator shaft or my room. :)

Get yourself a good set of headphones. That way you get to listen to your movies as loud as you want and the neighbors don't have to hear about it. Everyone wins.

I agree about the headphones. I live in a house with no noise constraints, but I still prefer to crank my tunes through a quality pair of headphones. My only concern is hearing damage since I tend to turn it up loud, and having all those decibels blasting in your ears can't be good.........

Another vote for headphones. Get a little DSP (Sennheiser makes a nifty one) so you can get the surround effects.

The problem with bass is that it slices through walls like a hot knife through butter and few things are more annoying. I don't doubt at all that your volume levels are far from extreme. You can have something at a comfortable volume and any sort of bass can still be heard (or worse.. FELT) by a neighbor or two. I would recommend disconnecting the sub in an apartment, either that or go with headphones, at least in the evenings.

Another thing that will score points with the neighbors: Offer to listen from their vantage point(s). Test your system. Put in a fairly "loud" movie, set the volume to a level you might watch it at and then go to your neighbor's place and just listen for 5 minutes or something. You might be surprised what comes through.
