Do you wish you could hire Star Trek set designers as your interior decorator?

I do. It's difficult to describe so this may not make sense, but I find the interior of Voyager and the interior of Enterprise on the new series to be pleasantly appealing. When I watch these shows I tend to long for that environment. I'm a highly creative person and my surroundings have always been important to me; my creativity will thrive more in certain environments. If I could make my own living quarters look like the living quarters on those starships I would be in heaven.

I like the way the curvature of the hull changes the look of a room, as opposed to the four flat square walls in buildings here on earth.

I like how the surface of the walls is often a combination of metal bulkhead and padding with an architectural design that needs no embellishments such as pictures, knickknacks, etc. Rooms are decorative without having been decorated, all that is needed is some personal artifacts to make the room one's own. Most rooms here on earth need pictures or posters hung on them if you don't want to look at bare white walls.

The lighting is one of my favorite features. I like the track lighting done throughout the ship that creates a nice ambient light emitting from the walls or beneath beams and ledges. Better than light fixtures anchored to the middle of the ceiling or table lamps that require another piece of furniture to place them on which would otherwise be unneeded.

Which leads to my next point: everything in the room is functional, no superfluous furniture or anything just to "liven up a room". Since they are space vessels everything is utilitarian which is expected, but I think their excellent blend of utilitarian design with just a dash of tasteful luxuries would be a perfect choice for my own home.

I think a combination of the Enterprise from the new series and Voyager would be best. On that Enterprise there is less lushness and lots of chrome fixtures. I love the chrome look, but I think to go entirely with that look would make your living quarters too sterile looking. While Voyager?s living quarters tend to lean too much towards a luxury hotel room. So a nice blending of the two designs would be preferable.

To me, my computer desk is the most important feature of my living space. I can and have done without a couch or a bed but I have to have a desk with my computer on it. It?s where I work and spend most of my time so it is important that I am comfortable at it and that its look and arrangement is just right. In tonight?s episode of Enterprise there was a scene with Captain Archer sitting at his desk in his living quarters. It was dark in the room except for the small lights under the shelves above the desk. It looked so cozy in there; I could work forever in that room under the glow of my computer monitor.

I?m also perfectionist so the neat, clean, sleek atmosphere would also appeal to this side of my nature.

Anyone else have these same feelings towards the interior design of the Star Trek ships?

Thanks for giving me the name, but I doubt I'll ever have that kind of money. 🙂

Just wondering if other people find the design appealing for their own use.

Agreed. I played Voyager: Elite Force (ok game, too short though). In some of the crew quarters, I'd just look around and just realize that it was pretty nicely designed. Just very nice looking and easy to live in.

Definitely. Course, I'd need a large space - I have a LOT of useless/useful junk in general. 😉

Thing that really sucks is that the designs already exist; but it would probably take a "specialized" crew of workers to actually assemble it. There's your biggest expense. :frown:

LOL, I did that too! I even have screenshots saved on my harddrive just to look at or maybe for future referrence. Maybe one day I'll get one of those design your dream home programs and see if I can't come up with a design drawn from ST starships.

I'm so tired of living in boring old four sqauare wall apartments!

DrMoreau (ST: TNG, I presume? How are things going after "Ship in a Bottle"? 😉 ), I agree with everything you said, except for the comment regarding ST: Enterprise. IMHO, the Enterprise from this series is the most lousy designed starship I've ever seen.

Enterprise (TNG) and Voyager (plus the Defiant) are looking pretty good.

BTW, what makes you think you can't decorate your room yourself in such a style? I know I can do it =)

I remember that there was an e-Bay auction a while ago, where someone sold his house that was modeled after Star Trek. The interior looked ALOT like what interiors of Star Trek looked like.

The interior-design in Star Trek IS very good! In fact, US Navy has studied the bridge of USS Enterprise (D model) as an example of well designed bridge. Captain is in the center of things, he has easy access to all relevant information. So don't be surprised if near-future warships have bridges that look like Enterprise-D 😉.

EDIT: Yes, I would like to design my home Star Trek-style. But I guess my better half wouldn't allow me.

Not really. I'm satisfied with my current living conditions. It's very peaceful, clean and has plenty of windows so that bright sunshine can filter through in the morning. If I had tons of cash, I might consider contracting with the ST designers, but as of right now I'm very happy and satisfied with my comfy home!

At least he didn't say that he wanted his house to look like the set of the *original* Star Trek...
