do you wear suit/tie if you are going to job interview for software developer?

I've never been turned down before for not wearing a suit, given the circumstances it's the interviewer who should be more concerned about pleasing my expectations 🙂. I've turned down job offers before, but certainly not because I didn't like what they were wearing during the interview... because well... doing so is just ****** retarded, and that goes both ways.

Some people can't seem to get out of the 20th century, I send my condolences to those that feel they have to put on a monkey uniform to be found of adequate value.

I contest that,
If you interview with a HR person, they have no idea how to judge your value. The reason for the suit is to get past the HR Department. The people you work with, your peers, will not judge you by your attire but your personality, work ethic, quality of work, etc. At least at a good employer.

HR unfortunatly has a large role to play in a lot of companies hireing process, and if you have to interview with one of them, dress to impress, because all they get is that first impression.

Another good idea is to look into what the company requires their employees to wear. Where I work, it's business casual, so if you're dressed less than that... ehhh not a good thing. Personally, I went with the suit, even when the places I went to weren't at the business casual level. It always adds a bit of professionalism when you dress "properly."

A lot depend on where you are in your career and what you bring to the table.

There are some guru developers in this tread that can call the shots. They are the ones that can get away with anything. Now for the rest of us it's a different story.

How you dress depends on the culture of the company. Do research on what the dress level is for the firm, then dress one level above it. If you can not find out what it is wear a suit.

I personally like to wear a suit. It makes me feel more business like.

Doesn't have to be a particularly nice shirt either. You have to keep in mind that if they determine your worthyness based on what you wear rather than what you know, is that really a place you'd want to stick around?

I wear to interviews what I wear on the street. If you don't hire me because of it that's great, it just saves me from wasting a few months before realizing I should have never applied there.

I wore a suit/tie to my interview here, but I can wear shorts and a t-shirt to work every day if I please.

Wearing a suit just looks a lot more professional and serious than if you come in wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

+1. Nano has no idea wtf he is talking about. Somehow he is trying to "stick it to the man" by not conforming with acceptable interview attire.

I'm a software engineer and I recently switched up from wearing nice clothes to interview to wearing whatever I wear normally. Since then I've been 4 for 4 for getting an offer and I think there are two reasons that the clothes make a difference.
1) I am more comfortable wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Especially if the other guy is wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I'll quite happily scribble something on a board ... then wipe it off with my hand because I just dont care. Thats how I work normally and its fairly effective.
2) As someone earlier mentioned, "There are some guru developers in this thread that can call the shots. They are the ones that can get away with anything. " ... now obviously I believe I am in this category. And by wearing the clothes ... it reinforces that theory. I had one company come up to me afterwards and say "We were a little shocked by your choice of clothing but we got over it once we talked to you." I replied that I wear clothes like that because it accurately depicts the kind of person I am ... if this is a company that places value in wearing a suit 'just because' or wear HR has enough clout to blackball a guy for being comfortable ... I dont want it.

Lastly .. my current place of employment specifically told me to wear whatever I felt like wearing in the interview letter. +1 imho.
