John, ask about the possibility of getting progressive lenses to correct your computer vision. My situation is a little different than yours though. I am nearsighted so I need correction for distance. To keep my glasses on all day without taking them off and on constantly to read, I need bifocals. There is literally no correction in the lenses for seeing up close. But the bonus with the bifocals with no lines (progressive lenses) is that they give me correction for computer work. The "tweener" area between to the two allows me to focus on the computer.
I tried contacts last year after not having them for many years and loved my distance vision as well as the greatly improved peripheral vision. Knowing that I would need glasses to see up close, I bought a cheapo pair at the hardware store to try out. I could then see up close but couldn't read the computer. The eye doctor said they could make me a pair of bifocals that corrected for computer work but without correction for close work. The bottom line was that I was going to have to carry glasses with me everywhere I went and I eventually decided to just keep wearing the glasses I had. I'd rather carry them around on my face than carry them around in my hand or a pocket and have to put them on and take them off.
