A sign you're getting old. Because 2 years ago when I went to build a new computer I went for the quietness route too. 😱 Before that I went for speed and fan noise be damned.

Yeah, I know what that's like. I got an LCD because it's easier on the eyes, and an Antec Sonata because it's whisper-quiet. Except when all 3 HDs are working. 🙂

X2 3800+ helps in Photoshop and some stuff. Not really necessary since I stopped gaming. That's why I sold my 7800GT to buy a fanless 7300GS. I aim for silence over power now.

drum,

A friend of mine bought my old computer (Enermax EG465P-VE, Albatron KX18D Pro 2, Barton 2500+@3200, Radeon 9500 Pro, 1GB Corsair Twin X and Lian-Li PC-68 with modded window and side fan) for $550. Still works great after 3-4 years. The 9500 Pro is overclocked to ~9700 Pro levels but he only uses it to play slots machines and watch porn. Here are some pics of the old setup:

I have since modded the front bezel to increase airflow and replaced the front & CPU SilenX iXtrema 120mm fans, which started failing after just 5 months, with Antec Tricools .

Yup, same here. Using the same computer I had almost four years ago and probably won't have to upgrade for a good while.

Gaming, work, and browsing, but I'm quite satisfied with current build. I haven't really found the need to get faster memory or overclock the CPU. My storage HDD is a bit slow, but I can manage especially since my OS is running off the raptor.

I'm not sure why so many people talk about the transition from speed to quietness. I don't see why you can't have sufficient levels of both. I have never strived for the max of either, just a balance that satisfies me in both categories. Basically, buy affordable parts (~$200 CPU, ~$300 video card), use the stock fans and run the parts/fans at stock speeds, and you'll basically get a system that will likely handle any new games just fine and not sound any louder than a nice quiet hum in the background.

I don't game much anymore, but this POS still runs most games pretty decent.

Athlon XP 2700 with a gigaram and a crappy ATI 9600

Only time my machine really gets maxed out is converting audio/video, or running the latest iTunes (oy, thought I had it fixed... the stuttering... ugh). Other than that, I'd love to downsize to something smaller, quieter, with more storage. Might go mac if I can afford it. Either that, or build/buy a small form factor machine. Something I could play the occassional game on and that had the chops to handle beefy stuff.

Just got my 5000+ X2, havent used it much for anything.

I'm still getting my OS problems sorted out... XP 64bit due to my 4 gigs of ram.

So far it ripped right through the videos ive tried encoding.

Im in the same boat. So happy with my Dell E521. Its quiet as hell.

Encode to h.264. Plan to upgrade my E6400 to C2Q but will have to hold out a little since I'll be spending most of my money on the Wii for the last half of November.

The most intensive thing I do is burn DVD's.

Other than that FireFox and Trillian are the most "demanding" applications I run on a day by day basis.

I have a 2.66GHz Celeron D on the floor running to the max.

Running folding at home.

My main computer isn't used the max that much unless Firefox hangs or running a game or video editing.

Run Rosetta@Home 24/7, play at least one of BF2, NHL07, Madden 07, Flight Simulator X and Need for Speed regularly, I use it for communication (MSN/Skype/Email - Gmail), homework, a few work related items, I watch movies and TV shows on it (20.1" Widscreen - Logitech 680-Z 5.1), I record several TV shows daily with it via ATI TV Wonder Elite 550Pro and Windows Media Center, and I use it for music, alot of music.. ripping CD's, downloading, organizing, and streaming, and loading my iPod. Its a regular work horse.

XP 2700+ with 1gig of ram.. will be 3 years old next May. Then I plan on getting at least a top end Core2Duo, possibly even a Quad Core if they drop in price.

Not really. The most work my computer has to do is record tv shows while i am using it for internet, e-mail, and instant messaging.

No, not really. Right now, everything I have running could be done on one core of this CPU, and it would still be under 10% usage.

Definitely running max on my 3.0C for multimedia (upconversion, shrinking, etc). I have to watch the load while adjusting settings so that I don't max it out, wish I had more headroom there. My native res is 1080p so games are strained as well. Give me cpu cycles, I'll make good use of them. When DX10 comes out I'll wait a bit for prices and drivers to stabilize then I'll upgrade.

yup.

1.2@1.5 t-bird axia stepping : P

The last game I played was worms world party.

I mainly listen to music/surf/etc...

while matlab/modelsim could run faster...it runs fast enough I suppose.

I think i'll upgrade sometime this year to a core duo.
