faster, and good if you're buying sensitive stuff :)

Never thought about it that way before. But why would I care if anyone else saw me buying deli meat and some bread and cereal.

its embarrasing when you have a wife/girlfriend and you are carrying sensitive girl stuff up to the cashier.

Oh come on, I buy that stuff for girls that AREN'T my girlfriend.

But, as we've established in numerous other threads, I have no shame.

You're not buying anal lube like rbloedow.

I use them when I don't have a lot of stuff, which is almost always.

Even when I go to a regular register, I usually end up bagging my own groceries.

I'm amazed when I hear things like this. Do you think they go through every item and figure how much it'll cost to have someone scan it and bag it and add that to the price? No... their markup is based on all of their costs. If they lower their costs, they can lower their prices. Now your response is "yeah, but they won't lower their prices, they'll just pocket the extra money." My response: Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart's goal is to lower costs to they can pass the savings on to the consumer. Other stores have a difficult time competing with Wal-Mart. Lowering their own costs allows them to come closer to competing with Wal-Mart. It doesn't help that Wal-Mart has their own self-checkout lanes though.

I use them because I used to be a cashier and knows where all the UPCs are at and the produce codes lol, and I always use my debit or credit card... I hate slow old farts who is dead set on using them even though they love paying in CASH and takes them 5 minutes to put one dollar bills into the machine...

I always use self checkout lines, if circumstances permit (for example, I wouldn't if the self checkout line is longer than the cashier's line, or if I had an outrageously large amount of stuff - mainly because the fvcking machines in my local WalMart malfunction *FREQUENTLY*).

Same here. Wal Mart has the worst ones. I don't think I've made it through one time without removing an item or waiting for a cashier. All the other self checks I use at places like Kroger never give me a problem.

I use them as training so that I can actually make use of them. It's a bit of a learning curve before they become effective at alleviating congestion at a store.

No kidding. I've never had a problem with the self checkout scanners at any Kroger that I've been to, and there are 3 that I frequent. There are 2 Walmarts that I frequent, and all of their self checkout scanners are crap. I'm trying to think of where else I go that I might have checked myself out...

I use them almost always, unless I'm buying a great amount of items...

The reason? Maybe because I'm antisocial, maybe because even with the huge delays required between items at self checkouts it's still faster than letting most of the cashiers scan things for you.

If I see a cashier working that I recognize and remember to be fast, then I'll go with them. But since I do a lot of my shopping late at night when the self-checkouts are off, I usually don't have a choice.

As for the guys embarassed to be buying tampons for their woman... seriously, grow a pair. Why the hell are you embarassed? Are you afraid the cashier is going to think you're buying them for yourself, despite the complete lack of logic involved with that whole scenario?

You remind me of the girls in junior high that were embarassed to buy that stuff for themselves. OMG, the cashier might know I'm female!

Also, though I've never tried it (and wouldn't recommend it), apparently some of these self checkouts have a huge, gaping flaw:

If you scan coupons that take money off items, some scanners don't check to see that you're actually buying the applicable item. So let's say you come across many copies of a coupon for a few bucks off, and then you scan them all, buy an orange for 25 cents, pay with a $1 bill, and get $30 in change back...

This is likely being fixed in most places, but whoever was in charge of the development of these systems must have been pretty oblivious to this issue. At the grocery store here, anyway, there are two self-checkout lanes and one 'supervisor' for both of them, who is generally not paying attention at all and wandering around talking to the cashiers.

Yes, much more covenient especially when i'm usually buying less than 10 items. If I ahve a lot of items I'll go have them bag it...
