Do you use S/PDIF??

Now that I have multiple components that support S/PDIF (Optical or single RCA jack), I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble of putting in. Anyone else use it? What do you think?

the problem with S/PDIF is that it will only output PCM for the msot part, unless you generate a DTS/DD signal with a soundcard that can do that, or well, jsut use passthrough for dvds and the like.

Frankly, I moved away from digital out and have been using 5.1 analog out using an audigy2zs so that I can take advantage of in-game audio technologies etc

I took have an Audigy 2ZS but I primarily use headphones with my pc. My Z680's aren't even set up right now. My biggest dillema at the moment is between leaving the Z680's downstairs in my home theatre or putting them on my pc and getting a real HT-Audio system. Either way, all of my HT components (HTPC and HD-Tuner) have SPDIF outputs and I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble.

I'm using S/PDIF from my laptop to my reciever, it works well for pretty much whatever I'm doing.

My recommendation is to try and see what you think, I personally like it a lot.

For your computer, having the A2zs do analog out is probably better than digital sent to the 680s. I'm not sure what different components you're talking about though.

For an HD-Tuner, unless it has 5.1 analog output, digital is the only way you're going to get anything higher than stereo out of it.

I guess whether it's worth the trouble to change your connection type is based on your other equipment. Pretty much anyone with even an entry level HT system is going to use a digital connection for several sources.

I don't even have many components and I'm doing

My computer via digital coaxial
Ladybuggy's computer vis digital coaxial
PS2 optical
DVD optical

Then output digital coax from main pre-amp to secondary receiver for some bass shaker bass management.

What the hell are you talking about? S/PDIF doesn't have restrictions on data format, you can transfer PCM DD/DTS and given software that chooses to use S/PDIF as an all purpose data transfer interface, you can even send porn.

When I had the SB sound card and my Z5500 Logitechs hooked to it I tried it between Toslink and analog and it sounded alot better through the analog set up big time. Just thought I would 2 cents that there is a differance, and not only in games but movies as well.
