I recently received on of those chain mails that warned about the dangers of margarine so I was just wondering.

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money
back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.....Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being
PLASTIC..

use oil spreads without Trans Fats aka (Partialy hydronginated oils). Margarine contains trans fats.

Real butter for cooking. A "spreadable" butter for bread and casual use.

Well no kidding. My family habitually refers to margarine as "plastic butter." We still use it, of course. After all, plastic's pretty inert stuff.

Oh, and that "ONE MOLECULE" stuff is hysterical, especially considering we're talking about long-chain organic molecules. EVERYTHING's one molecule removed from everything else. Of course, the molecules may be radically different...either way, it doesn't concern me.

Butter when the recipe calls for butter.

Marg when it calls for marg.

Butter if it doesn't specify.

Snopes doesn't dispute that margarine is bad for you, but it does counter the Turkey fattener claim.

Contrary to the claim, margarine was not invented as a turkey fattener. It was formulated in 1869 by Hippolyte Mège Mouriès of France in response to Napoleon III's offering of a prize to whoever could succeed at producing a viable low-cost substitute for butter. Mège Mouriès' concoction, which he dubbed oleomargarine, was achieved by adding salty water, milk, and margaric acid to softened beef fat. By the turn of the century, the beef fat in the original recipe had been replaced by vegetable oils.

Unsalted cultured butter for most things. Non-hydrogenated marg for toast.

Regular salted butter is almost rancid. Once I started buyingthe good stuff I can never go back.

I prefer butter, but my wife likes "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" so we usually use that on things. Of course if something calls for real butter, we use real butter.

I always like to burst peoples FWD: bubbles with snopes.

Also, when you think about it, plastic is made from oil. So any oil based item is close to becoming plastic. They can make plastic out of corn syrup for crying out loud!
