  • Left hand, both Shift keys

  • Left hand, Right Shift key

  • Right hand, Left Shift key

  • Right hand, both Shift keys

If I am hitting keys with my left hand, I use the right shift and if I am hitting keys with my right hand, I use the left shift. I was lead to believe this was proper typing etiquette.

When gaming, I generally use the left shift for everything, due to my right hand being primarily on my mouse.

That is what I do as well. As far as etiquette while typing documents, once you get used to your your methodology of typing, it is hard to change it. D:

Hmm, I use both, but not predictably. I realize now there are some LHS letters I use the L-shift for. Like, for A.

I'm right handed and always use the left shift key in the course of regular typing. I'll use the right one only when I'm doing specific custom keystrokes for special purposes.

Nice, what kind of keystrokes do you use, if you don't mind sharing? I know in Office, it is possible to map your keystrokes and it makes your life a whole lot easier and less time consuming. :)

I'm right-handed and type somewhere in the 50-80wpm range depending on what exactly it is I'm doing. I think a generic typing test always puts me at around 60. Do not use home keys.

Right shift only, it would appear. Left shift only when gaming, which I would think is a given unless you're not talking about playing something that uses WASD.

I cover more of the keyboard with my left hand. Right one pretty much stays planted; thumb or pointer uses space, pinky or ring operate shift. Left hand is more mobile and hits 3/4 of the letters. Usually with just my pointer.

I'm a little strange, I think.

I use my left hand on the left shift because its for walking in game.

Shift + arrow key = walking (in CSS)

If you look at the wear marks on my keyboard you'll see the right shift key is pretty much untouched.

Yes, I know it is "proper" to use the left shift when hitting keys on the right, and right shift when hitting keys on the left, but that was always awkward for me and slowed me down. I tried it but it just didn't work out well, so I hit the !, Q, A, and Z keys with my left ring finger when hitting shift with my left pinky. I type much faster this way.

I think it is partly because I'm left handed and partly because the right shift key is further away from the "home" position. But in the end it doesn't really matter, there really isn't a "right" and "wrong" way to do it IMO. BTW, I hit the space with my left thumb.

I type decently quick but I haven't done any speed tests to find out my WPM.

Typing = the off hand to whatever letter I'm capitalizing.

Gaming = usually ends up being the left. Right hand is on the mouse.

I took typing class in high school. On actual type writers. We learned two hand shift, but I moved to a left hand shift at some point.

The poll question is different than the thread title question, so the results are not accurate.

Right now it says 12 lefties and 12 righties. Doubtful.

I am right handed and use the left Shift key all the time.
is my answer too, but I mistakenly chose the first option assuming the poll question was the same.

One other thing, I "improperly" learned from the beginning that my left hand home key is the D rather than F and this allows me to keep my left pinky on shift at all times. It's great - I still type 105wpm.

This is almost as dumb as asking console gamers which hand they use for the D-pad.

Keyboard gamers use WASD or else they aren't real gamers and there is a shift key that is a LOT closer. :hmm:

Yes I realized that... Sorry about that.

Whoops, I meant right-handed with left shift, not left with left.

I don't think I've ever even used the right shift key.

That's one of my secret weapons for deterring people from using my computer at work - most of the letters on the keys have disappeared over time :D Plus it's the Microsoft 4000 ergonomic model, which completely throws people off. I'm amazed at how many people still can't touch type. It's not an easy skill to learn, but with computers being so prevalent, I don't know how people get by doing the hunt & peck deal.
