i have icons on my desktop, but they are all hidden using the "show desktop icons" thing. because i usually have a bunch of stuff open, i just use the quicklaunch, because its easier than getting to the desktop and minimizing all my stuff (even with the "show desktop" button).

notice how i have 8 programs open and can clearly see what they are... on top of my quicklaunch... and i can pull the entire bar up a 2nd notch when i get more programs.. i'd gladly give up an extra bar instead of having icons

Argh! You just had to post your desktop again, didn't you? You just made me want that theme even more, you know! ;)

You can hide all the default Windows icons quite nicely with TweakUI.
