I use the Start Menu the most. I have four things in my Quicklaunch bar (the Show Desktop thing, IE, Windows Explorer, and Outlook Express) and no desktop icons. To get rid of all the desktop icons in XP, right click on the desktop and go to "Arrange Icons By" and towards the bottom is an option that says "Show Desktop Icons." Just uncheck that and everything goes away. I love how easy it is to get rid of stuff. I'm such a minimalist and like no clutter on my desktop (my system tray is hiding everything but mIRC, AIM, Winamp, and the volume icon)

I have a couple of things on the desktop, but all the programs are in the Quicklaunch.
Before my last reformat I must have had at least 50 shortcuts there, it's so much easier than the Start Menu.

Why have a desktop if you never have anything on it but pretty pictures? What use is it other than a fancy picture frame if you don't use it to display information and hold icons? Why is it considered "cool" here to have an empty desktop?

I have 24 icons on my desktop, plus a display showing vital system stats. I'm be lost without 'em. Every other solution would add at least one more step to opening my most used programs.

how is the quicklaunch bar an extra step.. sure the icons are smaller... but at 1920x1440 .. my quicklaunch icons are just as big as the desktop icons.. now if only i could find a better 1920x1440 wallpaper :D

Because my taskbar is hidden. I have to drop my mouse to pull it up.

My way:
1. click on icon.

your way:
1. pull up taskbar
2. click on icon.

Don't get me wrong, I have many things in my quick launch for when I want to open a program while other things are running. But even that is not needed because my taskbar can show my desktop icons as a menu now.

It isn't "cool" to have an empty desktop, I just hate clutter. It's a personal preference really, you don't have to get defensive about it mate.

Naw, I've seen other theads about this same subject, and people really do have this "enpty desktops are cool" thing going on. No defensiveness here, I'm just trying to understand.

Well, if your taskbar isn't hidden, then it's only:

1. Click on quicklaunch menu

I prefer an empty desktop, not because I'm trying to be "cool", just cause it looks neater. And about some things, I'm definitely a neater is better person. I just like the quicklaunch bar. *shrug* Personal preference is your friend.

Then what's the point? If you're going to have a cluttered taskbar showing all the time (even when you are running programs) why even bother to clear the desktop?

The way I see it, all the icons I could ever need go in the bar at the bottom, and that way there is no clutter on the desktop.

The way I see it, that taskbar is cluttered and shows all the time, even when you're running stuff. :p

Seriously, I rather have my desktop cluttered, and have a clear, open view of what I'm running without taking up space with a huge unhidden taskbar. :)

I use neither. I use the start menu. You know, the thing that is suppose to hold the shortcuts to programs. You can get rid of the recycling bin icon by deleting this registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}]
@="Recycle Bin"

Do an export first just in case. I put the recycling bin icon in my start menu along with my computer and network places. It puts the default icons that are in previous windows version right in the menu.

I like a clean desktop, so everything goes on the quicklaunch. Just two or three icons on the desktop.

My Desktop
When I first bootup my comp, I usually use the icons on the desktop. I also like the taskbar clean- so I made a folder called programs and put all the files that would've gone on the quicklaunch taskbar into there.
