Double.

I was led to believe that a single space comes after abbreviations such as Mr. etc...

but of course. Who doesn't?

ban. ;)

I see single space after period, ending an implied subject. You ended a sentence with a period and used single space (I counted), therefore; your comment is mute.

;)

It should be two spaces with a monospaced typeface and one space with a proportional spaced typeface.

Newspapers have a weird spacing...I dunno what it's called, but basically how they space it depends on the size of the column. Some lines will have bigger spacing even between each letter while other lines maybe more cramped.

Years back, I read fairly compelling research that reading comprehension is improved when each discrete idea is separated by more space. The reearchers went so far as placing 2 spaces after each comma that separated an idea or concept, and this further improved retention and comprehension.

Because of that research, and since the double space rule was ingrained upon me since I was young, I vote double.
