How much power is consumed by a pc when not in use? how much power does the average monitor consume? I have seven of these babies crackin RC5 24/7. I am curious how much extra I am paying for this luxery.

Has anyone done a study?

Consider the following:

a) I host a webpage on my machine
b) I run RC5 on my machine
c) I don't pay for the electricity where I live

If you were me, would you ever turn your computer off? Didn't think so

Depends on your exact cost per kwh where you are, but it's probably about $5-10/mo. for each PC. It also depends a lot on whether or not your hard drives spin down, monitor sleeps, etc.

Cost also depends (correct me if I am wrong) on your powersupply.

My web server has a new 400w powersupply. My web site is under construction, so I don't leave it up.

I used to run it as a dedicated CS server, but since I moved to Texas and they cut my bandwidth from what I had in tampa, I don't anymore (who would play on an 8 person CS server?).

If verizon ever gets their act together and I get my DSL connect back, it will be a toss up between hosting my site during the day/eve, and running CS at night. Not enough bandwidth for both. :(

The PS can be any size, it depends on the power usage of the components currently running. If you've got a 400 watt PS but are only using half it's capacity, it's not using any more than a 200 watt PS would (if there were such a thing).

Wouldn't it be using a little more than 200, since the power supply is actually getting 400 watts, using 200, and losing a little of the surplus?

I don't know much about PSes and electricity in general, so I could be wrong.

naw psu's take what they need, and if what they need is more than what they are rated at max, they die. and usually the max is a max, usually you cant hold it at (theoretically) 395 watts for tooo long, cause thats a PEAK rating. also i've got a 145 watt psu, traded it to my boss for a 300 watt he he he
