takeout = nothing unless they impress me somehow, either with level of service (if it takes a long time, but they apologize, offer me a free drink while i wait, etc, = tip) or sometimes just by making idle conversation (not sucking up).

restaurant = $15-30% for me. always dependant on level of service. sh!tty service i usually give at least 10% though. good friendly service is always 20% or more. exceptional service is 30+. most i ever gave as a tip (percentage wise) was $12 on a $30 check.

To answer your question I will never tip when taking carryout. I also don't pay until I have my food ready in a bag sitting next to me.

Food tip - No matter where I go to eat chilies or some fine steak house you get $2.00 unless gratuity is forced.

Haircuit - Cut it correctly - $4.00 / Screw up - you give me a free haircut and no tip.

Taxi - Well the very few times I took one I had a set standard of $3.00

wow id be sure to spit in your food if you ever showed up again.

Now here is the problem. We as customers are not supposed to tip just to avoid having a scumbag spitting in my food.
By default You shall serve food without spit. I, as a customer, will then judge Your professionalism and tip accordingly, usually 15% for normal service.

j00 = teh a55ho1e waiter.

As a waiter though, you know if you if you gave bad service. And you shouldn't expect a good tip because of it. However as someone who has waited tables, if I gave you good service, and you tiped me 2 dollars.
I'd be pissed, and I wouldn't forget you. I'd have given you more than one time though, everyone is short money sometimes. But if it happened repeatedly, I would be professionally enough to not spit in your food. But the next time you had me you'd know what bad service was after that.

And I'd make sure my manager knew. They will do something about it sometimes. I worked one summer at a very nice restaurant, and we had this one guy that was a repeat no tipper (and he wasn't from Europe - I excuse that mistake). We told our manager, because we were sick of putting alot of time in at his table and receiving nothing. Usually parties of 4-6, bottles of wine, hours spent at the table. Next time the guy came in, our manager came up to the guy, told him before he sat down, that if he wanted to eat here, his bill from now on was going to include a 22% gratuity.
The guy balked at that, claiming he always left tips, and my manager proceeded to show him a copy of the credit card receipt from his last meal. And then asked if he still wanted his table. Guy ate there that night, and decided not to come anymore. And as far as the staff was concerned we were better off.

Edit As far as the topic goes. Tipping take out all depends. If someone runs it out to my car, I'll give them a buck or two. If I have to go in, I usually don't. Only because from my experience, the person that gets your food from the back, is usually not a server, meaning they aren't make less than $2/hr.

I usually tip 10-15% for takeout. They package up your food with everything you need, condiments, utensils, napkins, etc. Get you a drink if you have to wait, shoot the sh!t with you... etc.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. There was a pretty wide range, but the majority do not tip on pick up. Now I won't feel so guilty if I don't leave a tip or only a small one...

Eat in tip = nothing if service/food is lousy, 10% if service/food is reasonable, 15% for good service/food, 20% for very good service/food. Given that i dont order cheap food and usually drink a helluvalot of alcohol when dining out, even the 10% is a big tip..lol (and im always polite and friendly to serving staff)

Takeaway collection = nothing, they havnt done anything except ring it in the till and take the money, im already paying for the food!

Takeaway delivery = nothing if late, keep the change if around £1 if on time, mebbe a couple of £'s if early but food is cooked properly. (hate raw pizza...yeach)

Only at the Chinese food place...
But, they know me and always throw in some extra goodies or knock down the price a bit, so it kinda evens it out.

I always tip for takeout. 10-15%, versus 15-20% for dine-in.

I don't know about where everyone else lives, but where I live the waiter or bartender are the people who take my order and often package my food. In other words, people who rely on tips for their income. The only difference between takeout and dine-in is that they don't check on me once or twice to make sure everything is ok, which it always is unless I want a refill of a soda. I don't think that the entire tip they earn is just for them refilling my soda... apparently the rest of you do.

Edit: And BTW, why does it matter if they package it anyway? When they serve you when you dine-in, all they are doing is taking your order and carrying your food. They don't take it out of the pot and put it on your plate and sprinkle it with parsley.

i usually dont tip for take out because especially at chinese resteraunts, you only get soup/desert when you dine in, and you dont get it with take out. So, i figure the tip kinda makes up for that.

no i dont

only tip when dineing in, or delevery

however i think the whole Idea of tipping is moronic, they are getting paid to work, theres no reason i shoudl give them more money, and we only seem to tip in the food industry

you dont see people tipping the mail man or the dry cleaner or whatever

Not moronic at all. Dry cleaners have a small variance in quality of service from employee to employee at the same place. All they have to do is stand in one place and push a button until your clothes show up, and dump your clothes into a bag when you turn them in, for example.

Mail man can't accept tips because that would most likely be illegal.

If you have ever been to a country where gratuity is automatically included in the bill, you would see why it's important. Every place I've been to where it was the rule had much, much worse service for the most part.
