I usually tell them to keep the change to the next dollar. They're just unlucky if it's $4.99, they get a nice penny.

There's literally no place I can think of around here that doesn't have a Sonic within 1 mile.

it is awkward, they usually try to give me the change, so then i have to give it back to them
or if i pay with a large bill , like a $10 or $20 , i can't say "keep the change", so i have to get all the change then give them some back

so it turns out, if i pay with small bills , i tip by having them keep the change. if i pay with large bills, i get all the change and i keep it

At the one Sonic that I know of that is near here, I don't think they deliver to the car.

if the change i will be receiving is more than $0.50 then i will tell them to keep it. otherwise i will throw in an extra dollar.

That's usually what I do as well. So usually a dollar and something for a tip, which usually works out as more than 15%. Pretty good for just walking out to someone's car.

Hell no, I wouldn't even consider it.
Plus, I usually pay with my credit card anyway, eliminating the option of letting them keep the change.

It's not like their hourly wage is only a few bucks an hour like a waiter at a typical restaurant makes and they have to rely on tips, nor do they do anything special. Oh boy, they have to walk 10 feet to my car to hand me my food!

They provide a service, that warrants a tip. Go to McDonald's, where the cashier at the window gets handed your bag of food by someone else if you want to be a cheapass.
