your not supposed to tip. They are tipped out at the end of the night. why would you tip them twice? do you tip the wait staff too? no, because they already get tipped at the end of the night.

10 or 20 bucks up front.

That way you're guaranteed fabulous, premium drinks all night. While everybody else is drinking well stuff.

Cheap prick.. :|

Why is he cheap? If the gratuity is already on the bill, it doesn't matter if you tip 'cuz they're already getting one. You're just giving them even more tip.

I don't know if weddings are any different, but I just bartended an open bar at a $130 a plate function, and tip's were not included in the package, though we weren't getting $3 / hr either. We were pretty slammed the entire night, tips were appreciated.

I can tell you that tip was not included in our wedding bill.

If it was the difference between getting my food served hot and getting it cold I would. If I could tip the waiter $20 and get all you can eat lobster and filet mignon instead of rubbery chicken I would. If everyone else had to line up for the baked ziti buffer and a tip would get me tableside service of king crab and jumbo shrimp cocktail I would.

Well in your situation I would most certainly give a handsome tip.

I'm getting married next year and gratuity will be included in the total. If anyone wants to give a tip that's fine, but if they don't I certainly won't think them cheap.

To all of you who tip 20 at the beginning, how do you to make sure the bartender even notices the 20, let alone remember you for the entire night?

Hand it to them. They remember.

You can use this at any bar to drink for free. just hand them a 20 and you'll rarely have to pay for your drinks. It's "on the house"

If they don't see you, pull it out and do it again!

I've seen this technique used at a wedding in Germany and it produced outstanding service. I don't know if I could do it though, I feel like I would be monopolizing my friends hired help.
My friend who attended the wedding has a catering business, so he knows the business. He and and a group of his friends took a table at the wedding reception. They told the waiter to make sure that there was plenty of food and drink on thier table. The waiter was told that there would be a pot of money in the center of the table and he could come and pick it up every hour. They got great service.

I usually tip at least $1 at the beginning. Then as the night goes on I'll tip every other at $1 or so. Then sometimes to throw them off I'll tip $2 on a drink. I figure, if I'm getting free booze for the night, I can drop $20 on tips.

Would this still apply at a busy city bar/club that has multiple bartenders per bar? How do you tip in that situation?

Always work with the same bartender everytime. Frequent it a few times and you'll be known, rather quickly.

It's just like sales. Throw some business their way and they'll jump.

last wedding i went to had a open bar. it was rather high class. the groom already had paid a huge gratuity on the bill (i was best man so got to see most of the bills heh). when we got to the place they didn't have tip jars out and even had signs saying tips not necessary.

im sure they still made a bundle. i seen people throwing money at them all night.

it was great. free beer and mixed drinks! man i was just a little drunk heh

yes.
The last wedding I was at I tipped the guy $5 at the beginning of the night so I wouldn't have to worry about it later.
