It depends on where I'm picking food up at.

Fast food no, a restaurant I'm a local at, yes.

Get some extra benefits because I tip a couple local places I know of because they know we tip on take out.

Some places have been known to sneak some extra goodies in.

It really depends how often you visit the place and if you are a regular customer then yes, especially if you normally eat there and pick up is rare, and if it's not a chain place.

Granted you shouldn't tip as much as you normally do obviously.

Has anyone traveled for business? By the time you're done tipping everyone you will have spent in excess of another close to $100 bucks or more!

I should make a book entitled: Tipping is bad for business. LOL

If you are going to eat fast food or just have, don't click.

You do know that you can order food to go from regular restaurants and not just from fast food places, right?

I haven' seen any restaurant that do not allow the customers to order food to go.

The only food we pick up to take home is pizza, and I don't tip. If it was something like Outback, where they are doing a lot of assembly/packaging for full meals (separate containers for each side order, verifying everything is included, etc.) I probably would tip $2-$3. But a pizza is already in the box when it's finished being made, I don't see any value-added by the cashier I interact with. And I'm not looking for excuses not to tip, the places where we eat in frequently know we tip well and are happy to see us.

Curbside pickup like Outback where they bring the food to your car and have loads of containers for the meal, I do tip $2-3. But I don't tip if I have to go into the restaurant to pickup. Some places like Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen charge $1 extra per appetizer or per entree if you pickup. They actually have separate to-go menu vs dine-in menu with different prices. Most people probably don't notice. All item prices on the to-go menu are $0.70 to $1 higher than dine-in menu prices. I understand why they have higher to-go prices. All the extra containers, bags, condiments, etc are not free. If I ran a restaurant, I would have separate prices for dine-in vs pick-up.

I always tip at least 20% when dining in and tip a little when picking up. But I avoid fast food places with tip jars.

I tipped 2 bucks on a thai take out order last night too. I would generally stiff for take out order, but I'm a regular there so I can't have them looking at me like a cheapass =X

$2 extra for them picking up the phone, handing me a bag, and not spit in my food. fuck tipping.
you got to be kidding.
I've been going to my local Chinese place for take out for 5yrs.
owner is the head cook. wife is usually at the cash register.
never tipped. food came out fine every time.

note: I do tip the times I go there w/friends and eat there.

The common arguments:

1) You're a horrible human being if you don't tip these poor underpaid peoples
2) They still do all the same work, ie take your order, bag up your stuff, and not spit in your food
3) They are unable to provide excellent service without tips
and now you sound like a weak minded fool that cant put down $0.00 on any tip line on the credit card receipt.

What the waitress makes in wages is neither here or there. You tip for the quality of service (ie: were you greeted, did they take your order timely, did the food arrive timely, was the order correct etc.). If all you are doing is picking up your to go order, the minimal service provided is expected and should not require tipping. Sorry but we customers work hard for our money too.

You've actually taken the time to post three times in a row about you never tip your local take out place ?

It's a bit funny actually, they probably see you coming from a mile away and say that asshole is here again.

So you guys are saying that those people aren't doing anything that's not in their job description so they don't get extra tip? Well a waitress isn't doing anything extra that isn't in their job description and they deserve a tip? They get paid minimum wage.

Why would I tip someone for simply handing me my order? I don't tip fast food workers either and they do exactly the same thing and put in the same amount of work.

it is harder to spit in your food at the buffet

They spit in everyone's food. But seriously, last month I pulled out a hair out of my mouth that was over a foot long from a buffet. Didn't break a sweat and continued eating. Showed it to one of the waitstaff and he whisked my plate away. I LOL'd knowing that the place is very clean and that shiz happens. My wife on the other hand... she would have freaked out with her OCD. I still haven't told her.
