Much better. Overpopulation doesn't bother me much, since it won't affect me in my lifetime, and probably not even my kids.

Things are getting much better. The main difference is the advancement of technology. The benefits Science and technology are fueling a heretofore unknown age of rationality and morality. The reason for this is simple; when people are largely healthy and comfortable, they have more time to think and more inclination to give a shit about each other rather than being absorbed in their own personal problems.

When my dad was my age he had a bachelors degree in communications, 3 kids and a 2500 sq. foot house. He earned 60k (not in todays dollars) and bought a house for 90k.

Today, I have a masters degree, will be lucky to find a job for 55k, no kids and to purchase the exact same house my dad bought almost 20 years ago would cost $250k.

OP, you might want to consider modifying your question into two (2) parts: Are things getting better/worse in general? Are things getting better/worse for you personally?

For me I think things are getting worse in general and (at least perception-wise) worse for me personally.

guarenteed job till 2012 via contract 😀

Economically, things are worse than in the recent past...but yeah, its not the fucking dark ages. The reason things are so depressing is people generally expected things to get better for their children than they were for themselves. I do not have that expectation.
