DO you think they detonated a dirty bomb or a real one?

Dirty, or otherwise just released some material into the air.

I don't think they have one. I think he's just looking to extort money from the USA. I think the admin is right not to engage him one-on-one.

Who is they? North Korea? I thought we were assuming it was conventional explosives.

WTH? Do you mean North Korea?

Nuclear would establish that it was a real one... Although the magnitude isn't very high and also no readioactive debri has been found, so who knows if the claim is real or not.

Nope, the UN and the US is assuming the worst. That is why sanctions are proceeding.

The fact of the matter is the test was done underground and could have been sealed off so as to not have registered or shown any debri, also wind current could have blown the debri off in some uncalculated area.

That might explain the seeming small size and the radiation that didn't show up right away.

I think it was a failed real one. NK is trying to one-up their status in the world but it isn't going to work. Already NK is leaning towards participating in multi-lateral talks after the sanctions came down.

WASHINGTON - Air samples gathered last week contain radioactive materials that confirm that North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion, National Intelligence Director John Negroponte's office said Monday. In a short statement posted on its Web site, Negroponte's office also confirmed that the size of the explosion was less than 1 kiloton, a comparatively small nuclear detonation. Each kiloton is equal to the force produced by 1,000 tons of TNT

The goal of the dirty bomb is to spread the radiation.

There wouldn't be a point to testing such a device. NK probably did detonate an small yield warhead just to prove they could. There is also a thread in P&N on this already.

NK was reportedly shooting for at least a 4kiloton bomb. They only got a ~500 ton bomb. Supposedly, small yield nuclear bombs are more difficult to pull than a large yield bomb.

Makes sense. Measurements for dough are much less precise when baking 1000 breads then when you're just making one.

Unless the point was to make others believe they had the ability to make nuclear bombs.
