Do you think the CPU is Dead?

i received this computer from a friend and it wasn't working. no hdd leds or even power led. i purchased a new p/s and the computer started up, but then the p/s had a blue arc in it and all went dead. now, i have taken out the ram, it is functioning flawlessly in another computer, cd-rom, working perfectly, hdd, still works. my question is do you think the cpu will still work? it is 1GHz P3 and all i have are Athlon m/bs. i really don't want to spend the $$$ on a P3 m/b if i don't have to. or is it a shot in the dark? i have cleaned up the chip with alcohol and it appears to be in excellent condition, no burn marks of any sort.

Yes I think so. A short somewhere probably blew the PS, but that shouldn't kill the CPU. The RAM being still good is a good sign.

thanks for the info. is this the "coppermine" chip? it is a socket 370 and has sl52r on the chip. what chipset is good for these? i build amd machines so i am not familiar with the intel chipset at all.

Its been a while, infact I believe I have a Katmai PIII, but if its 1 GHz, its definitely Coppermine. I think they transitioned from Slot 1 to Socket 370 (remember slotkets? heh). Erm, try looking for Intel i820 and i840 chipsets.

Blue arc? I mean your PSU shorted? This rig seems to be pretty proficient at killing PSUs.

are these chips any good? i have a 1GHz athlon as a machine i mess around with and have learned many things on it - apache, win2k serv, mail servers and ftp servers. i am currently using it as a print server and holder of ghost images from my other machines. i am assuming performance would be on par with a athlon 1GHz? anybody know where i can get a cheap m/b? atx, not the smaller boards.

i have gotten rid of the old, bad m/b but before i tossed it, i looked it over and from what i could see, there was nothing obviously burnt. ?

thanks again for the help peeps 🙂

an athlon 1ghz would outperform a pentium 3 if i rember corectly.

I have one of these 1ghz Coppermine cpus hanging around myself. I was wondering if the thing is dead it would give a post code of 00 with a post card because it doesnt work? The cpu itself has no visiable damage eather. Its been tryed in two motherboards.

FCPGA socket 370 at Directron

That Intel 815 board looks interesting for $49 shipped. Onboard video, sound, AGP slot. No overclocking on Intel brand mobos, and the Intel video is not useable for any recent 3D games.

There is a Biostar mobo you can still find around for socket 370.

Micro ATX boards work fine in ATX cases. Few people need all the PCI slots on an ATX.

PIIs and Athlons were pretty close at the same clock speed.
