Do you think the 8800 GT 512 price will drop in January?

The 8800 GT 512 can now be purchased for $250. Do you think the price will drop within the next month?

Why poll - just wait another week and see... ;)

I can't complain, since I got mine for ~$228.

And you can do it, too!

I mean within the next 30 days, not just at the beginning of Jan.

It should, assuming demand tapers off, which is typical after Christmas is done.

That was my thinking as well. But who knows? Markets don't always behave in a (seemingly) rational manner.

It'll drop 4-6 weeks before the new refresh of nvidia cards comes out or the new ati cards comes out.

qft
I don't think it will drop significantly in Jan 2k8.

Nobody is coming out with new chipsets as soon as Feb 1 2008 to cause drop...

I've been watching the quantities on hand at the big box sites and they have been moving down so ever so slowly (yawn). I am in the market for a pcie card ( I just unloaded my old 8800gts 320 by evga). The so called deals are not really deals i.e 3870 @ $249 when the MSRP should be $239. An 8800gt by evga for $249. The on-line sites are no better. They carry (what insiders call bastard brands) for $209 after rebate for the 8800gt and $268 for the 8800gts ( both 512mb). These are also slow movers maybe because of questionable after sales warranty details (i.e. rma to mainland China). Yes I think the hoopla is just about over. I hope to see name brand gts for $299 and gt for 249.

If it would just move down to msrp it would be a significant price drop. It all depends on availability. Currently, there just aren't enough in the channel.

I thought $250 was MSRP for the 512MB version?

I wouldn't count on it. No reason at this point for the price to drop. Especially now that NV is releasing it's 8800GS series to fill lower price range gaps. But, you never know.

Yeah, especially since these cards are still brand spanking new to the market. I doubt a price drop worth waiting for is gonna happen anytime soon. I say just hop on the "best" deal you can find atm.

FWIW, I've been watching the EVGA vanilla 8800GT 512MB at Newegg. There seem to be two SKUs for it, one with a bundled game and one without, but anyway 1-2 shipments of it ago, Newegg was charging $259.99, but the last time I got an in stock notify, it was up to $269.99. I'm going to jump on it once it hits MSRP, the longer I wait the more of a sure thing step up to something amazing and new will be.

Yeah, I saw it for $245 when I made the OP (would've been like $260 shipped) and they sold out right away. I wish I'd jumped on it then.

Edit: Oh well. I'm working full time now and don't have much time for playing games anyway.

I have learned something from all this: if a video card comes out that offers unprecedented performance for the money AND is available at launch, then buy it the first week and don't look back. People have been burned by waiting for the r520 when the 7800gtx was out, waiting for the g71 while the x1900xt was out, and finally waiting for the r600 while the 8800gtx was out. To some extent, the same can be said about those who waited after the 8800gt was released. Next time I want to upgrade, I'll remember not to play the waiting game.

I'd say yes. For a number of reasons...

-In the US, we're not in the best straights with the economic state
-Maturity of processing leading to better yields, and higher-speed bins
-The holiday buying season is behind us
-The post-holiday buying season is behind us
-If prices stay high, people will be contented to wait for unreleased products
_ Such as photos of the ~9800GX2 dangling...
-People buying desktops less and less- leading towards less of a market, less demand
-Rising prices of LCDs due to:
_ -Iridium shortage-concerns
_ -Rising glass prices for screens
-The discontinuation of the first run of GTS cards
-Discontinuation of GTX cards due to new GTS cards
-In the 8600 series, the GS will be introduced, and either the GT or the GTS will disappear as the GT can be overclocked to almost match performance of the GTS

If not in January, definitely in the first quarter- although that is a bit more ensured if a new product comes down the line- or some competition...
