I'm probably either going to stall out the plane and crash, or roll off the runway and crash into the fence.

Either way, this isn't going to end pretty. I'm not naive enough to think that any of the time that I spent playing MS Flight Simulator is going to help me at all in a crisis situation like this.

All of you worrying about finding the airport:
In a typical fixed gear light single, runways are highly overrated:p
Find a good open pasture without standing water, make a big circle back to said pasture, and "bring er in":)
No narrow runway to deal with, no real start or end except for the "farmer arresting gear" < fences>.

Meh. Highways were built for a reason. To land airplanes on.

Ever notice the long stretches? Landing strip.

I believe that's interstates. Has to be a 1 mile long stretch of straight road for every 10 miles..or something like that.

Anyways, we had a class back in school that had MS flight simulator along with very realistic controls. I'd atleast have an idea what to do. I think a better question would be asking people what exactly you're supposed to do with the controls (and nobody spoil it).

I don't think thats the case atleast in WV.

I don't know, it's not very hard to get a plane down, as long as you know the fundamentals of flying, you should be able to bring it down safely. just keep you hand on the throttle so if you need to abort the landing you can.

Actually large boeings as you call them, have ILS (Instrument Landing System), if you can figure out how to engage that (since your great buddy just took out the radio...), then you should be ok.
BTW, most people with basic skills/knowledge should be able to survive landing a small single engine plane, given perfect conditions.

never flown a plane but i think i could figure something out. i think the biggest issue would be figuring out a suitable landing speed. i'm sure there would be a flight manual around someplace anyway.

This just verified with MS Flight Simulator 10, I can land a small aircraft fairly easily, and without wrecking it. Weather was set to clear skies.
I also managed to land land a 737-800 though I ran off the runway pretty quickly since I couldn't align properly.

Now, trying to land a f***ing helicopter its a whole new ball game.

I logged many a hour running intense flight simulations using NES Top Gun so I would say no.

with my luck, i could probably pull off a decent landing, then not figure out how to stop the damn thing

I've spent many hours playing IL2 but most of the time I'm ejecting (ctrl-e) from my flaming wreck. However I think I'd still be able to walk away from the landing.

I know I could too :) Have about 400 hours, but it's been quite a few years...

I doubt it... no idea what all those buttons are for. I've played flight simulators so I know rough basics but that's it.

M$ Flight Simulator has prepared me to land a 747, this single-engine plane in your scenario would be child?s play :)

Yes.

As the old saying goes: "Takeoffs are optional, Landings are mandatory"
