Do you think that you can become good at anything?

I used to believe that certain things are only for people with flair. I am starting to change my mind now.

I have seen a very close person to me learn just about anything and become actually quite good at it. I know somebody who sux at design(real real sux). But studied real hard about the subject. Became real good at it. :)

"There isn't anything you can't do if you put your mind to it." Your parents told you that for a reason. Natural tallent can take you far but nothing beats hard work (except hard work and a lot of talent)

Edit: On a personal note I am dyslexic and I have become quite a decent writer and I can read faster than most people because of hard work and practice. I still can't spell worth a damn but hey that's what spell check is for.

I think it's possible for someone to learn something. However, whether he picks up on it, learns very quickly and becomes quite skilled over a short period of time and whether the person has to work very hard for a long time to become familiar with it is something that depends on the person.

People are different in their propensity to learn -and that's what differentiates some from others. Like me. I picked up a pair of drumsticks eight years ago, without a single lesson ever, and I've already played state-wide and along side world-class drummers in concert. When it comes to musical instruments, I learn really fast, and become comfortable with the instrument. But, when it comes to things like learning a myriad of physics equasions and trying to remember which one should be used to solve the problem, I have to work at it to keep up with the pack. I love both, but one I am much much better at learning.

no one gets anywhere without dedication, hardwork and practice. If you want to get good at something, just start doing it... if you are determined, you'll eventually get good at it.

I've find that the more things you commit too, the easier it is to pick additional things up. Some people seem to be good at everything because they have a firm grasp on what kind of commitment it takes to get good at something. they aren't as easily frustrated when things get tough.

there's nothing wrong with believing that anyone can become good at anything.
i think it's the matter at hand is... can anyone become the best at anything.

and i'd say no to the latter quetsion.
take violin for example.
i think with enough coaching, hard effort and persistance,
one can become a professional violin player.
but to be famous for doing so... it takes inate skills developed at a young age.
... i'm not saying it's impossible...
but it's quite near impossible for someone who's never picked up a violin till 30's
to become a concertmaster at a decent orchestra.

recently, i've been studying php coding.
coding isn't my specialty, but i wanted to give it a shot.
and without sounding cocky...
i can say... that even before opening up a single webpage or a book,
i had the confidence that i can master coding ...
enough so that i write out structures that's in organized in my head.

do i think that i can become the very best coder? probably not.
given the fact that i'm just jumping in the water...
and that there are thousands of people that's been making a living on it for years.

but that doesn't mean that i dont' think i can't compete.

i feel like once i put my mind to it...
i have faith in myself to achieve my best at anything.

I know I can become proficient if not good with any activity or hobby if I put enough effort into it.. problem is that my attention span is about *yay* big so by the time I start developing any measurable amount of skill in something I find something else to entertain me. :)

Some stuff you can learn. Some stuff you have to have a built-in instinct for. Not everyone can become a theoretical physicist, mathematician, or computer scientist. These require minds that can think very abstractly.
