Do you think PROFESSORS can usually give you a C- (PASSING GRADE) if you beg them???

I'm taking an Engineering Economics course and I'm failing it. Midway through the semester, I found that engineering is not my gig and I really want to major in math and teach young kids. As it stand, I need to ACE the final to get a C- in the class. That's pretty much wishful thinking considering I got a C and an F on two of my test. This class is basically worth jacksh!t to me except that if I don't pass, my GPA is gonna get f*cked up and I might get into trouble with financial aide (which I honestly really need next semester because I'm gonna quit my job to focus on school).

One of my friends said that if you really beg the professor and give a good enough reason, he'll usually pass you with a C-. I'm planning to do this today and was hoping if anyone had any experience with this.

You should follow the unwritten book of the road on this one.

If you've done everything but the final, can you take an incomplete & simply never finish it?

I'm not sure about Incompletes but I can't drop it now because I would need the Dean's approval (with a really good reason like medical). Plus even if I can, it would put me under full time status and STILL get me in trouble with financial aide, even though my GPA would be ok.

Try begging and see if you can do some sort of extra-credit assignment. I've always allowed students to do extra credit to bring their grade up if it was on the low side.

If I was a teacher I wouldn't allow begging. That degrades the grades all the other students had to work for.

I've heard of cases where professors did buckle to studant begging, and many cases where they didn't...suppose it doesn't hurt to try as you really have nothing to lose

Here's what to do: get a B or an A on your final! The extra effort, plus the fact that you're changing your major might be enough to convince the him to give you a C- instead of maybe a D+

electric, yea i know where you're coming from but this is really a course i dont need anymore. a C- is really not a great grade either. if i was still in engineering, i would never even think about begging. but currently, this course serves no purpose for me whatsoever except harm me financially and academically.

I had a Microbiology professor who would not talk to anyone until a week after an exam. He said it depressed him to have people cry or beg him for better grades.

Ha ha. Yeah, if you're lucky, you'll hear this from your prof:

"Sure I'll give you the C-...But I just gotta let you know, we work on the barter system around here" :Q

i reaaaly doubt the professor would bump you up to a C-. I would just withdraw from the class, but as you said that would cause financial problems.

Good call...withdrawal usually doesn't do anything to your GPA but looks bad if you've got too many of them...if it's your first, don't worry about it :)

I think it depends on the relationship you've got with the prof. I didn't beg, but I was honest with one of my profs on why I had stopped coming to his class after the 2nd week. I can't remember the number value that he gave me... 1.8 maybe? However, I was in really tight with him, since I'd taken a bunch of undergrad classes and done some research projects with him, so he knew the work I was capable of doing.

Also, as ViperGTS suggested, check out your school policy on incompletes/full-time-status/financial aid. That quarter was the worst I'd ever had. It's been a while, but I believe I got something in the low 2's and an incomplete for my other 2 classes. I should've been put on probation, but they never sent me anything or called me up. Maybe they let it slide the first time, or look at your previous records... Whatever the case, that was a >really< crappy quarter. :)

My guess is that you're out of luck. I got a D in my Calculus II course last spring semester and I tried to see if I could do anything over the summer to raise my grade to a C. The teacher didn't let me do anything and I lost my scholarship as a result. :(

Odds are at this stage in the game it's MUCH too late to withdraw.

Otherwise I would have suggested that.

Typically, as Viper has noted, withdrawls without penalty have to happen prior to midterm. An incomplete is assigned by the professor...........just skipping the final will only give you a zero for the final test grade and a final avg. of probably F.

If, on the other hand, you'd already struck up some sort of speaking relationship with the prof., outside of the classroom, such as stopping by his office to chat (something that should be done within the first two weeks.......gives the prof. a face to work with instead of just a name), talking in the hall or in the local pub, then you may have a chance.

A couple of years ago, I was given a C in second semester Spanish but in actuality had a 56 avg. going into the final. But I had talked with the prof. a few times, shared a smoke, and in the end, that little bit of effort paid off. Although I had an F after the final, I received a C. The prof can assign whatever grade he/she wants, and while I didn't have a good test score, I tried in class and talked with the prof. Taking pity, and the fact I wasn't a Spanish major but just satisfying a core foreign language requirement, I skated.............thankfully.

The best thing you can do in the future is establish some sort of speaking relationship with your profs in the first two weeks of class........and then visit for a minute or two every couple of weeks during office hours. Many a grade has mysteriously improved for me at the end......getting A's when it should have been B's instead.

In your case, your GPA is about to take a major hit. Takes 4 A's to pull one F up to a B.
