Do you think people would eat less in America...

Crono

Lifer
...if restaurants, food (and beverage) companies weren't allowed to advertise at all?

I'm not saying it would be a good or bad idea, or that it should even be considered legislatively, just wondering if it would have an impact.

No, it wouldn't. Punishing companies for consumers' inability to make good choices is not the way to go.

No, I think a lot of it is a parenting issue. If you teach your kids good habits they will tend to carry them throughout their lives. Teaching them things like portion control, avoiding heavy amounts of carbs, eating vegetables, eating slowly, & such goes a long way to ensuring they will not eat like pigs when they grow up.

taste buds win over any sort of habits you are taught 99% of the time. My mom couldn't have been any more strict with what she allowed me to eat growing up. But my taste buds refused to ever let me even remotely like vegetables. And even though I never had them as a kid as soon as I tasted potato chips it was over for me. 13 years of her forcing me to eat her healthy food was all undone when I tasted my 1st Pringle 😀

Fried foods just taste better to most people, it's really unfortunate but except for some exceptions to the rule that's how it is.

You can have the best of both... fry those veggies and convince yourself you are eating healthy. 😉

Yeah we all go through that when we get out on our own but you eventually learn you can eat good and have it taste good. When I was a kid I would gag on brocolli and now I eat it 2 or 3 times a week. I used to hate tomatos and now I eat those regularly as well.

I guess my point is we all grow up sometime....that or get diabetes.

In socialist France, any ads for food have to carry a little note, how eating requires moving, and how it's important not to over-snack, but stick to n meals per day, and eat your vegetables, and whatnot.

It's amazing how the average Frenchman is so much slimmer than the average American, despite this being the land of wine and culinary pleasures, and lazing in the sun.

Might be that it's those very culinary pleasures that actually make people eat less on average, to be ready to dig in for the big family meals when they come up.

Damn, now I'm hungry.

it's useless, in Europe we have food and beverage ads too.
I think the problem is that americans eat shitty-tasting food, so fried shit is the only thing that tastes good to them.
Fried stuff or fast food cause addiction to eating a lot and feeling that taste, and culinary habits are passed on to children.
Any cultures that eat too much fried stuff, such as neapolitans, get fat. Arabs get fat too because they love their super-sweet weird desserts. I don't like them because they're too sweet.

I almost never eat fried stuff.

The problem with americans is sugary drinks too. They are completely unnecessary, you get enough calories through your diet, so why not just drink water instead?

Nice to hear from people who don't live here giving their ignorant views. Americans eat shitty-tasting food...lmfao

you wanna know why 'muricans are fat? breakfast at McDonalds... that has got to be the single most disgusting thing I've ever tried.

Yes it would. To pretend otherwise is to assert that all of the billions/year spent on marketing/advertising is money in the drain. It's not, with less advertising Americans would consume the product less.

McDonalds breakfast is one of the most delicious foods ever created. I wish you could get it all day.

Everyone I've ever known who has traveled to America has said that the portions you get in restaurants etc are massive, like double what a normal person could eat. Every single one.

I'm sure you guys must have seen those comparisons of soft drink sizes from 30 years ago to now. A modern child size soft drink serving was an adult serving 30 years ago!

Yea, portion sizes are ridiculous. I think they do it because It adds "value" without adding a lot of cost.

I only had it once on a school trip to NY, two people from my class actually puked right after eating it. If you start your day that greasy then it's no fucking mystery why you need a rascal to get your fat ass around.
It didn't even taste good (McDonalds never do) it was just so gross and disgusting.

I'll partially agree with you, except for the McGriddles. Damn, those are good, esp. when on a road trip. Fortunately, I suppose, the closest McDonalds to my house is 25mi. away. And I ain't driving 35-40 min. just to go to one, and that's on a good day. These days on the Cape, aren't.

I vote smaller portions and somewhat lower prices.... that's what needs to be done...

none of this take half your meal home BS like from the Cheesecake Factory

Odd, every post in this thread is about potion control, eating in moderation, sugary drinks or crappy food. Not a single one about exercise, or the lack there of. :/

Hey, who let you out of H&F?😛

The portions are ridiculous. Quite different when we went to England some years ago.

Never said the portions weren't over sized or that the food wasn't crap. But you can still eat small portions and decent food and be an out of shape blob if you spend your life on the couch.

Nope. I have never bought any food because of an advertisement and I haven't really bought anything else like cars , appliances because of them either.

Absolutely. There was a recent study that said some extra pounds weren't a problem as long you were fairly active.
