Do you think participation should be part of your grade in highschool classes?

No. Most teachers say participation is but the teachers never fully enforce it. They may bump someone up a notch if they participate often but otherwise, you're grouped with the others.

Usually the teachers that stress participation call on their students anyway. I hate that b/c they catch people off guard. 😀

but thats the best part...i sat back used and watch the sleepers try to answer a simple question...ususally the teacher made him look like an ass. Twas fun.

I would participate more but its just that im a quiet person. I do sit back and form my own opinions, but those are eventualy said outloud by others anyways. Its just kinda hard for quiet people to start talking a bunch outa knowwhere, it seems like making people talk is kinda wrong since everyone isnt as social or outgoing to talk about controvercial subjects.

I don't like to talk during class - I'd rather chill out in the back and listen to what others have to say. If I have something really groundbreaking or intelligent to say, I'll say it, otherwise all of my points get made by other people throughout the course of the class. However, I better start talking in English this quarter - 2 weeks left to bring up my participation which makes up a lot of my grade. By the way, get this, participation supposedly counts for 50% of my 3rd quarter grade in AP English. Yes folks, I'm getting a big class participation grade in a college level course. What the friggin hell!?

However, if the class is like a debate class or something that is centered around discussion (my first semester Public Affairs class was) then by all means, include class participation. But if it isn't, then f' no - not all students like to speak up in class. I don't, and I'm certainly not shy, I just don't feel like it's necessary for me to speak up. Bah.

Man I wish 50% of my grade in APE was participation. God that class was sooo much more work than it was worth.

This teacher, knowing that i dont talk much regularly, still dosent even make an attempt to call on me...so im really in the hole. The class disccusions are usualy run by 3 outgoing strongly opinionated people, and the other 20+ kids just sit back and say something every once in a while. If only 3 students are getting an A+ in participation and the rest of the class is probably C or lower (judging on the scale i was graded on)....bah pretty much teh majority of the class is as quiet as i am, i dont see how u can put so much emphasis on participation if nobody does participate.

APE was one of my fav classes since everyone was intelligent and witty (including the teacher). The class was filled with endless witty/sarcastic humor 🙂 i miss it already.

Well Mani, the other 50% of my grade is not a piece of cake - it is definitely more work than it is worth. I feel like I have done nothing but busy work for 3 quarters. My class sucks - there are a few people that talk but have nothing to say, if you know what I mean. We're all second semester seniors - no one cares any more, including me. I'll try and make strides to improve my participation over the next two weeks so I can still get a halfway decent grade. My essays have been pretty good though I think - I haven't gotten any back...not even the one we handed in 7 weeks ago (not including a 1 week vacation). :|

Odd that a state at the bottom of the barrel has higher standards for it's students than others.

yes, but only in the form of positive or negative extra credit. as in if you do well academically but continually disrupt class, you can be marked down. likewise, if you can be marked up if you always ask insightful questions. but if you keep to yourself, then your grade is whatever you got on your assignments and tests.

HAHAHA. Not at all. Well, ok. For some yes, others no. I hardly ever paid attention in class, yet I was able to obsorb information like a sponge, even though it seemed like my mind was elsewhere. (add does that to you.) I hardly ever participated or paid attention yet I passed all my classes with flying colors. 🙂

So I would say it depends on the person. Some people need to pay 100% attention and participate. Others don't.

If you require kids to participate they will actually learn....it makes them listen more instead of jerkoff in class. I think participation should be part of all levels of school.
