Do you think of yourself as a above average driver?

I am most certainly below average. That's probably because I don't get a learner's permit till July 2006. I've been out maybe once or twice on straight rural roads.

Considering most of America could not handle driving in NYC and that is where I live/drive, I think I'm an above average driver. I'm not perfect (and I've only been driving for a couple of years) but I can handle my self on highways and in the city.

I'm above average in actual handling skill and have been since learning the ropes of driving. But until around 21 or so, I was an awful driver, a real leadfoot. I'm a very safe driver now, walking away from a 100+ mph impact that totalled my beautiful car may have had a little something to do with it 😛 Don't mention the irony of being a good driver yet getting in that accident; there were extenuating circumstances which I will not discuss.

i sometimes scare the sh!t out of ppl who are not used to driving with me...and while i do things that many would not, i know my limit and am never stupid about the chances i take.

🙂
The problem with this is that while you may be within your driving limits, other people are stupid and unpredictable. You may have a car very capable of doing say, 100mph, and the skill to match, but if some moron pulls out in front of you, skill won't do a thing - but doing 70 instead of 100 may.

They say most people consider themselves to be above average when it comes to driving skills.

I once drove from Tenn. to Mo. during a long weekend while I was in the service. It was the only time in my life when I was certain I was going to die! This guy was the worst driver I have EVER seen and since his car was new to him, he wouldn't let me drive. I eventually lay down in the back seat and waited for death. There were SO many instances where he almost killed us both that I really never thought I would see another sunrise.

When we finally got to Mo. I flew back rather than riding with him again.

I have no doubt that HE thought he was a good driver....

How well do YOU think you handle a motor vehicle?

i was gonna vote until i saw nascar....

I can powerslide any AWD car rally-style (scandianvian flicks and all) and I ride sportbikes. Nuff said.
Also If you're a new york driver, you should only be deciding between the last two options on the pole.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big Nascar fan. It just jumped into my head. 😉

I'm surprised it took that long for a moron to come into the thread.

Anyways, I think i'm probably above average compared to people my age, but average to older adults..

Even though NASCAR guys are damn good drivers ( i saw bunch of 'em at some rally exhibition and they kicked ass), only a fool would make a nascar to be a benchmark of driving skill.

Seriously, I swear I'm going to have an aretery burst every time I have to drive in the city. Its a good thing NY isnt a concealed carry state, because at least a dozen yellow cabbies would get shot out of pure rage every day. In any single day of city driving, it would be impossible to actually keep track of how many violations/dick moves that I witness or am a party to.

Ive nearly been ticketed once when I cabby cut me off by making a left from the center lane on madison ave, of all places. Got me caught in the box, and I swear to god if every single cab didnt look like the next I would have hunted the bastard down to the damn river if I had to.

That being said, Im probably a bit above average, because I never take stupid or even marginal chances, and only gun it when theres no one in front of me.

Do you know the history of how Nascar came about?

It was from the old moonshine runners.

Are you saying those guys didn't know how to drive? 😉

But we drive like complete asshats because if we dont, the real asshats will drive all over us. Thus begins the vicious cycle. 😛

That being said, considering the driving we have to deal with on a daily basis, I'd say we're better drivers, you guys just cant handle the pressure.

I get where I'm going pretty quickly. I have never been involved in any type of car wreck that involved damage or injury, though I was involved in a 2mph "bump" on an icy road a couple of years ago (neither car had any scratches or dents as the collision was literally at 2mph.)
