Do you think NF2 boards are outdated?

Hi group,

I'm trying to select all of the components for building a HTPC. One of the main things I really like is the Soundstorm feature that isn't supported past the NF2 chipset apparently.

My plan was to buy a Abit NF7S board with a 2500+ CPU, but now with all of the talk about all of these new AMD64 CPU's and the NF4 boards coming out, I'm a little nervious buying such dated hardware for a new system (which prolly won't be bought until around December).

What do you guys think? Would you have any trouble buying a new NF2 board for a new system anytime soon? Granted, this won't be a PC that needs a super ammount of horsepower, so the 2500+ (or whatever the socket A goes up to) might be enough for what I want to do. I just really hate to limit myself just because I'd like to get Soundstorm.

Thanks!
Aaron

sktA is a great choice for HTPC because of SS, just throw a barton mobile in there and overclock if you need more speed down the road.

I did some checking on newegg last nite and as mentioned, the 3200+ seems to be the highest Socket A that is made. That being said, I was also pretty surprised to see that going for $200. I asumed it'd be much lower.

Thankfully, the HTPC isn't a total CPU hog, so hopefully the NF2 board will be able to give me a few years, until someone else comes out with a nice Soundstorm alternative.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Thanks for the tip. I have really never been into overclocking, so could you explain what chip this would equal out to that wouldn't be over clocked? For example, would the 2200+ with your settings be equal to the 2800+ running at stock speed? I guess the main benefit to buying the slower CPU and overclocking it would be to save the money?
