Do you think movie theaters will ever cease to exist?

I was just thinking about the days of the "Drive-In." Damn, those were good times.

Lost our local one over 15 years ago🙁 Lost it to a Wal-Mart.

Drive ins have enjoyed a mild resurgence here in the US. Almost all of them had closed up in the mid to late 80s.

I think there are one or two near me in cincy... but maybe one of them just closed or something... don't remember.


I don't go to theatres TOO often, but I do enjoy the experience when I do. Not everyone has a home theatre, and until they do and cable companies offer new releases to be rented on the day they come out, they won't shut down.

Actually, I see more and more theatres being built than seeing them go downhill.
 
I have a movie theater in my basement and it is awesome. They will certainly exist for our lifetimes.
 
were still lucky enough to have a drive-in theater located just outside of town, but its going down hill, i give it a couple years 🙁 lots of memories there

All I can tell you is...HOPEFULLY! I have no need for them. There are WAY too many morons congregating in one place while I'm trying to concentrate on the actually movie. I've either got a retarded mother that decides bringing a baby to a rated R movie is a good idea, a moron kicking the back of my seat, some loser talking next to me (and not in a soft voice, just a normal speaking voice like nothing is going on. :|), or a genius that decides, "hey, I thinking coming in 20mins after a movies starts is a good idea" which in turn disturbs the rest of the audience by walking around and trying to find a seat. And you get all this fun for $9 a person. GREAT!

Fvck the movie theatres. I'd rather have a movie released, and streamed to my home theatre the day it comes out in theatres. Once that's done, you'll see theatres start closing up. And all I can say is...ABOUT TIME!

Soon? No.

Once there's cheap technology that will be able to project full res movie quality and sound to go with it, along with easy cheap distribution of the material to view, theaters are going to not be a big attraction for the reasons JackBurton mentioned.

It's only a matter of time until we're going to have display technologies that are of high enough quality that anything more isn't going to really be noticable to the human eye.

Unless movies theaters evolve to give us something we can't obtain at home besides a crowd of strangers, then they're going to be in rough shape.

I thought such technologies existed...but they just are not affordable for the average person. 😉

That is, unless you consider the fact that the DVD format is limited in its ability to provide quality video so no matter how you are displaying it, it will never look as good as the raw movie itself.

Hopefully that made sense.
 
A drive-in movie theater just opened up in my town. Two screens. Its been very popular. I personally love it. I do not see movie theaters going somewhere becasue not everyone can afford a $5000 home theater setup, but a $7 ticket every so often isnt a problem.
 
If they don't stop showing a half hour of commercials they can close tomorrow for all I care.

55" HDTV with Dolby 6.1 and progressive scan DVD's are great. Can't wait for HDVD's, and no jerks cell phone conversation to deal with.
