Unfortunately you cannot outlaw ignorance, but I believe with every generation it is improving. Sadly, in many areas we are still a nation not segregated by law, but by choice.

Some things have equalized, look at OJ. Killed a white woman, obviously guilty yet walked free. ;)

I would have to say that it has been realized in about 75% of the population.

3rd, Exalted Cyclops

Cheney, Rice, Pelosi, crackhead

Not sure which scares me more, Pelosi or Byrd...

I think his dream was on it's way to being realized, until the family unit in the black community mostly collapsed, and black youth got caught up in hip hop inspired thug culture.

Not the color of their skin.

Most of my life I've lived in a melting pot really and never looked at others because of the color of their skin.

But, I did live in North GA mountains (active KKK up there even) for 4 years and there were a lot of people up there that were straight out racist and it was sad really.

I think I'm a good example of the differences between now and how they were in my parents and their parents generation where most everyone DID judge based off of skin color.

I wear baggy clothes :(...stop judging me! *cry* (honestly, I plan to change my style but all the smaller pants never seem to accommodate my huge (literal) ass)

I do believe that it has gotten better, though some people will always assume superiority over others based on race...and pretty much any other stupid thing they can come up with. I know a few people who take the whole North/South thing to the extreme.

And even though I am black, I have to say we do need to incite a little change in our own community.

Sometimes I find that a few white people I deal with think I outright hate them from the start, so they might as well throw it right back. In reality, I'm part German. Some of my cousins have blonde hair and blue eyes and put Carrot Top's whiteness to shame. My dad looks more like a light hispanic color than black. So...hating whites would mean I hate half of my family. Not only that, I was raised in a mixed community so I don't care what color you are as long as you aren't a douche.

QFT. I can't believe it either; everyone knows the real issue is about gender. Hillary should stick to making sammiches.

The saddest thing of all though is that certain ethnic groups seem to do more to encourage this then others.

Judging a person by their color is simply moronic.

So is taking the Bible literally.

Sadly, there will always be morons on every issue.

We've come a long way, but we're getting closer every decade. Things will never be 100% ideal, but we're at about 75% IMO.
The main problem now is not straight racism, but more subtle racial profiling. I'm sorry, but if I see some guy of any race wearing "gangsta" clothing (wide-brimmed hat to one side, grill, etc), he's immediately associated with those it's-hard-to-be-a-pimp 50 cent wannabes who take all of that ghetto shit seriously. Most members of said sub-culture are black, uneducated, and otherwise low class.

If I got to know said guy, my opinion might very well change, but that would be my initial impression.

According to Colbert, Dr. the Reverend MLK spoke in his speech that "I have a dream this shall end." And it did.

How would you answer this question, Mosh?

Edit: Oops, saw you did a few times. My mistake.

I think we have come a very long way as a society since the dream speech. I've met folks who have not changed their views on race since that time and the difference is astonishing between their views and views generally held today. How I try to look at this is to discount media reports/portrayals of race relations and focus on how folks around me act and talk on a personal level. On this level, I think the dream has been realized to a great extent.

Is racism (subtle, not outright and outright racism) still exist? You bet.

What are you going to do about it? I refer to do everything I can to better/improve myself than just sit back and cuss it or blame it for all of my failures and refuse to accept any responsibility of my actions in life.

I think things are better than they were in MLK's day, but overall...NO. People are still judged by the color of their skin, by the clothes they wear, by the church they attend (if any...and they are judged if they don't) People are judged by the country or even state they may be from.
Being judged doesn't automatically mean discrimination however, and THAT is the area that I think has gotten better...somewhat...but there's still a LONG way to go to realize the dream of MLK jr.

I'd wish I could say that his dream was realized, but sadly, people are still judged by their color.

A more accurate statement would be that people are judged by the color of their skin, which is often times an accurate indication of their character.

you need to look no further than affirmative action to realize that racism is still alive and well in this country.

You have to look at it on a larger timescale than the one you're used to thinking within. People tend not to change much, and so cultural change requires multiple generations at the least.

Yes because the worst kind of racism is the kind against white people. "Looking no further" than that seems to be a common occurrence on this forum.

The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism.

"I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man," Freeman says.
the labeling and race quotas, racial politics have set race relations into a stasis of f*ck.
so no, the dream is not realized. and many well meaning people have done their best to keep it far away.
