do you think people are still judged by the color of their skin, and not by the content of their character?

people think they are better then other people
groups of similar people think they are better then groups of other peoples

sadly this will never change

Depends who you ask. I believe things have definitely progressed since MLK Jr's time but there are still people out there, and ALWAYS will be people out there, that will always judge people due to skin color.

things are better than 1963
but i don't think we are where we need to be yet

these type of things take 3-5 generations or more to "fix"

i think he has achieved his goal partially: minorities enjoy the benefits of certain programs, and in larger cities, they are viewed as equals.

however, i think that does not apply to every city in the US.

what's surprising is that some people started using the race card. MLK would be deeply disappointed.

Do you think MLK's dream has been realized

we have a white woman and a black man running for president from the democrats, arguing about race. so, no.

Unfortunately yes ... its still common to see people judged by race instead of character.

The saddest thing of all though is that certain ethnic groups seem to do more to encourage this then others.

I don't think that was his dream. They are being granted benefits based on the color of their skin, not the content of their character.

Things are better. Just look at the number of interracial marriages now.

However, things have almost flipped the other way as well where identity and gender politics are getting to be absurd.

considering yesterday while playing call of duty 4 on xbox live these 2 guys on my team kept saying "get this n*gga" and "there's another n*gga" over there, and after hearing these 2 douche bags talk this way for about 5 minutes i finally said "could you please just shut the fvck up because it's really annoying hearing you guys talk" and his reply was "see dawg you get these crackers on the internet and they act all tough n shit but let me see them in real life and they would never say that shit to my face, i'll even give him y address and i bet he won't come and say it to my face" and then he continued to run on his cracker this and cracker that rampage, i'd say no ... his dream has not been realized.

I think things are much better today, especially when you consider that we no longer have segregation, back of the bus, town curfews, etc. I think back to the days when Sammy Davis Jr. was not allowed to stay in some of the hotels he played in. Those things considered, yes, things are much better. Unfortunately, there are some who will never change and will continue to instill their beliefs in their offspring.

To bad those that are instilling their beliefs in their off spring are usually the "victims" of racial profiling and teach their children how to use that to their advantage by playing the race card and living off of welfare and government programs.

I think that there are certain aspects of the dream realized as has been pointed out in this thread. I also think that there is a long way to go to see this dream realized. I don't need to be constantly reminded that, as a White American, I was the cause of millions of immigrants/slaves/Native Americans troubles. When people can see past over 300 years of problems, then we can begin the healing.

well that is the problem right there, because you, even as a white american, had nothing to do with the millions of immigrants/slaves/native americans problems. you weren't around when that stuff happened.

I don't think you're ever going to get an answer to this question beyond what you've said here. It is always going to be the generic 'We've come a long way, but have a long way to go still..' which is really just a cop-out. For the majority of people the dream has been realized, beyond that is an area where it will never change (fringe groups, insensitive comments, etc.). The only real issue that can be worked on is the disparity of income and criminal activity, which seems to me to be more and more the responsibility of blacks to handle themselves. We've given them an institutional advantage in the form of affirmative action yet the culture of many black youths continues to promote crime and violence. They can't really blame anyone but themselves for that.

As long as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have a say then his dream will never be realized. They need something to bitch about.

I judge on how one speaks, acts, dresses, etc..

Not the color of their skin.

Most of my life I've lived in a melting pot really and never looked at others because of the color of their skin.

But, I did live in North GA mountains (active KKK up there even) for 4 years and there were a lot of people up there that were straight out racist and it was sad really.

I think I'm a good example of the differences between now and how they were in my parents and their parents generation where most everyone DID judge based off of skin color.

We still have bigots in BFE and we have a unanimously elected grand cyclops of the KKK as 3rd in line to the presidency, so no...

I would have to say that it has been realized in about 75% of the population.

The most unfortunate part is that a good portion of the racism against blacks is not from a feeling of superiority, but a fear that those black people you deal with will have been indoctrinated to hate whites, have no desire to become acclimated to civilized behavior, and are prone to attribute all their shortcomings to racism.

A sort of self fulfilling prophecy. The dragon eats his own tail.
