I prefer foods with shorter lists of ingredients, I prefer organic foods, I prefer fresh foods without preservatives...

But I'll eat all the preserved, genetically engineered pesticide coated versions if the above cost 10x as much.

On that note the local farmers market had some organic bananas for 29 cents / pound, yum.

I think less of people who are irrationally afraid of things and/or they wont try something.

But as to the OP, MSG seriously fucks me up so if it's like a medical thing, I totally understand.

I'm afraid of people who insist on only eating well done meat.

It depends on how their distaste is presented. Some people only mimic subjective over-hear and in a very forceful, unprofessional way. Some people are cautious because of what they've drawn from media outlets, or perhaps an innocent misunderstand of the biochemistry.

For instance, with mercury being a well-known toxin, many people would be cautious of its presence in things like amalgams. Forgoing the argument of safety, it wouldn't necessarily be wrong for someone to hear of mercury and become cautious about considering such types of dental fillings.

However, other people are foolish and think that scientists/doctors/engineers aren't worth listening to because it conflicts with their "common knowledge." Such people as the latter are dangerous because they can incite panics over things like vaccines, rather than being objective. But again, if a parent were to be cautious but not irrational about their decision making in vaccination because of their genuine concern for the children, it would be entirely different. This group of people often respond well to scientific enlightenment, and are not the kind of people that irritate me.

I think less of folks who throw away food that is one day past it's "best if used by" date. Matter of fact, I usually point and laugh.

He said an irrational fear, meaning without basis. If he had simply stated a fear of unnatural additives, I would have agreed with him.

Irrational I would agree with, but he goes on to talk about someone telling him about how MSG is bad, which it is...

MSG stimulates the pancreas to release insulin into the blood stream even when there are not any carbohydrates in the dish for the insulin to act on.
Your blood sugar ends up dropping because of this flood of insulin, and then you end up hungry again an hour or so later
read the rest here http://www.thefitshack.com/2007/04/12/exactly-why-is-msg-so-bad-for-my-body/

Basically MSG makes you hungry and can cause over stimulation of your pancreas leading to diabetes. Among other issues(over eating), I wouldn't consider that irrational.

The big issue is most people don't bother to look into the chemicals and what they actually do. They think "well if the FDA approved it, it must be ok" Or something along those lines and anyone that says otherwise is 'irrational'.

over stimulation of the pancreas due to excess MSG, over extended period of time, CAN lead to diabetes... causing it to produce tons of insulin for no reason. Just like eating tons of shitty sugary food CAN cause diabetes.

You're one of those people the OP was talking about. Severely mentally ill and paranoid. But you read it on the intarweb so it must be true.

MSG along with others has been proven to enhance taste - the whole "unami" thing. It's not some evil chemical out to harm you. Do you know anything about taste and cooking? Next you'll say salt is bad for us.

Basically you're the kind of person the OP was talking about - irrational fear not based in reality. That's called mental illness.

Oooh ooh, let me take a swing at him too!

Do you realize the FDA's reason for existence is so that normal people don't need to check out every single ingredient in every single product they purchase? Asking each and every person to research all these things is ridiculous. Even if he wanted to, Joe Blow just doesn't have the ability to analyze all the relevant data for even one product, let alone all of them all the time. If he did, why do we need full-time scientists? That is why we pay scientists to spend their lives figuring this stuff out, and that's why we have organizations like the FDA.

I just can't believe you're willing to take some website's word for it but you're not willing to take the FDA's word for it.

who are irrationally afraid of chemicals?

the other night, I had to listen to this guy carry on for like half an hour about how much better Boston Market chicken is over KFC because MSG is a product of the devil and it's a chemical designed to make us addicted to fast food.

not sure I could have rolled my eyes any further back.

and then today, one of my friends made a FB post about how she loves crystal lite and like half a dozen of her friends were like horrified over consuming aspartame.

Did you mention to the guy how regular tomatoes contain a crapload of glutamate?

not fear of additives in general because I'm not convinced all of them are harmless, in fact I quite doubt it.

though when I see someone treating MSG like the devil I think "tool".

Since we've taken up canning in our home from fresh produce grown by us I call anybody that has a "pure, natural way" as a fucking fool and tool.

When you grow and produce your own food you realize there is a severe mental illness with people the OP describes. You try to deal with a plant bacterial or fungal infection without modern technology or genetics.

I find it utterly ironic that the people described by the OP could grow or make their own food if their life depended on it. They rely on an ingredient label to decide what food is good for them. This is darwin at work, let darwin win...PLEASE.

When can will the people learn that it's SHIT that makes their plants grow?

Does repeating old jokes from the thread's first reply really make the thread better.

Just pointing out that minimizing intake of chemical substances doesn't quite work when some of those substances, like water, are necessary to live.

I think less of people that use the word "organic" in any sentence not relating to biochemistry.

"These chairs are wonderful and so organic!"
"These cloths are organic"
"He has an organic personality"
"That fruit is SOOO Organic."

Seriously, it is one of the biggest farces pulled on people since the inception of bottled water. Organic = Hydrocarbon = 99% of food. There are organic pesticides, your food doesn't become less "organic" by being exposed to pesticides, its still the same stuff (There's just more of it.)

You buy something that is organic, how do you know it wasn't the apple that fell off the truck? Because it is put in a bamboo basket and marked up 100%?

No, in limited or 'normal' quantities they're both fine... the issue is it's in EVERYTHING we eat. Along with salt if you eat fast food 10x a week then yes you're getting WAY too much salt and its bad for you. same with HFCS of most anything else for that matter, as long as it's done in moderation it's probably ok the issue in america is moderation. Hell beer is ok in moderation, 24+ a day is bad for you.

I eat MSG, I'll occasionally have some HFCS albeit rarely. I eat food and I don't have any fear of these chemicals, but I'm aware of whats out there and how it can be dangerous.

The people that think aspartame and MSG is going to kill you are the same morons that think vaccinations caused autism, or the same people that think "cleansing" your colon actually does something.

I love it when they talk about toxins, like it actually means something medically. These are people that have ran out of any serious issues in their life, so they can focus on things that don't matter. Enjoy your shitty tasting raw food diet.
