Why do so many people around here seem to have this attitude? Maybe its because a lot of the population here and ATOT are parents...

Nope. It is because it is true. I am not a parent yet. I am not even dating yet, but the only people who would say differently are either spoiled young kids or spoiled old kids.

They need to do a reality show where they switch the lives of poor kids and rich kids for one summer, and see how they fare. Seriously. It will make the rich kids really appreciate the fact that they have had it really nice.

It's a fact of life. When someone supports you, they own you. Be it your parents, your sugar daddy/mommy, or the government.

Want to be independent? Pay your own way. Until then, get used to living at the whim of your benefactor.

If you are considerring purchasing a Porsche, why would your parents still be supporting you financially?

(I'll express my opinion on this once the flamers come and go)

If you were completely independant, then your father couldn't do jack to stop you. If you rely on him to get the car... then he can be as unreasonable as he wants.

BTW you're really not helping your case much with these assanine threads...

No they don't own you. You are still your own individual with your own rights. I am not saying that I approve of Goku's whining because his 'daddy' doesn't want to buy him a Porsche, but the broad statement I quoted makes it seem as if it is ok for a parent to do anything they want with their child, which frankly isn't true.

A parentally is legally obliged to take care of their child in order to keep them, so them doing so doesn't make you their slave. They are supposed to do that. Saying that they can do ANYTHING just makes it seem as if physical, mental, or sexual abuse becomes ok because 'they pay for your way'.

Yes. At least until they are 18 or they choose to not claim them as a dependant.

But I don't think anyone is warranting abuse here. The fact of the matter is, a parent can still be an excellent parent without providing a car, computer, bike... (food, shelter, AND AN EDUCATION <education in the broad sense - training in something to help in survival and future, not necessarily higher education> are all that is necessary). All that other stuff, you seem to feel are necessary... which they are not. Since they are not neccesssary, they fall under the grounds of things that the person who paid for it has total control over.

Whether it is reasonable or not is completely irrelevant. If you want financial support from him you have to live by his rules. It really is that simple. When I was young my parents told me I would never be allowed to own a motorcycle while living under their roof.....so I waited until I was on my own and bought my first street bike at the age of 24. What is the big deal. If you are still getting CASH from dad what makes you think you are going to be able to afford a Porsche anyway? If I was your dad I would cut you off simply because you could afford an overpriced toy car.

Abuse is one thing, house rules are another.

In your pathetic attempt to make your argument you went to a ridiculous extreme.

Let's try this again for the simple minds out there:

If someone supports you, they get to tell you how to live. If you refuse, they cut you off and no longer support you. If you choose the support, you give up your freedom.

It's that simple. You can protest it all you like, you can deny it all you like... but it wont change a damn thing.

A parent may have a legal obligation to care for their child, but their child gives up most freedoms in the process. The parent has total control over their lives. Any parent who chooses not to use this control is negligent to say the least.

I know that. I wasn't talking about this situation. I was just pointing out that I don't think someone paying for you means you are thier slave. It sounds like this person is under 18, and therefore dependant. Let me repeat myself, "I am not saying that I approve of Goku's whining because his 'daddy' doesn't want to buy him a Porsche"

I never said 'all that other stuff' was necessary. I know the person who buys these unecessary items have total control over them since it is their money. But saying that someone who pays for someone else and do anything is unreasonable. At least in my opinion.

Do you even read my replies? Are you paying attention. Do you not understand that I am not advocating Goku's cause. I have said many times I do not agree with his point. All I was doing is disagreeing with the statement I quoted. Go re-read my post before you decide to bash me.

Ummm Dumac.... if you can't read thepd7 as an exaggeration/hyperbole to point out a fallicy in the OPs thinking, you my friend do not understand it and therefore probably have the same mentallity as the OP.

In no way is thepd7 warranting child abuse, or at least I hope not. Yes, you are "grasping at straws" to say you empathize with the OP because I haven't seen anywhere or anyone on this thread that actually support child abuse. Read my last post in response to your post.

My Father-In-Law is like that with Japanese products. We have a Mitsubishi TV and he's not too fond of that...of course, it doesn't stop him from watching it when he comes out to visit.
