The rats would have to climb back up the wall and stay there until they fell asleep and down into the water they went. This happened over and over until the rats died.

So a lack of sleep can kill you.

but those rats died from drowning right?

there was also a similar experiment done where the rat had to keep walking on the wheel thing, and if they fell asleep they'd get zapped with a small electric current, which would then wake them up. after a few days, they died

No; you will die if you are awake too long. The brain either goes insane, or shuts down. At some point, you'd flat-out drop on the floor from exhaustion. If you are kept awake though through some chemical means, or from lots of mental stimulation, you would die.

But as soon as I felt my eyes getting droopy and put the magazine down, I would find myself wide awake again.

What they left out:

I wish I only needed around three-four hours/day, but nonetheless I'd love to still HAVE to sleep.

Theres a family in Italy with a genetic defect that doesn't allow them to sleep.

A side effect is that their brain wears out by the time their in their late thirties early fourties.

Uh, lol.. I'm not entirely sure of the reason sleep is necessary, but that isn't one of them.

So do you think your immune system & other repair systems just have each day off or something? :p

Do a Google search on "fatal familial insomnia."

There are people who haven't slept in decades. In all cases, death eventually comes and rescues the individuals from their personal hells on earth.
