I hated French, and it destroyed my high school GPA.

Typical report card:
Math: A-
Physics/Chem: A-/B+
English: A
Social Studies: B+
French: D

For awhile I actually tried to learn it - actually paid a lot more attention to French than any other subject - but it just didn't happen. I got extremely lucky on my college entrance exams, because I tested out of French and never had to take it in college. I have absolutely no idea how I did it, because I sure as hell didn't know the stuff.

Well, find yourself an English speaking girlfriend and teach her French and she'll teach you English! Ooo la la! :p

Do you think it could be a good idea?

I took French in high school and college. I recommend it as a second language. Studying it actually improved my understanding English grammar.

I've studied Latin, German, French, and Spanish. Of those, Latin was the most useful and German the easiest to learn. I hated French with a passion.

24% of the European Union population speak German (as a native tongue), while those whose native language is French or English are only 16%. However, about half the European population speak English, while not many people learn German as a second language.

Between French and Spanish, it's a toss up. They are pretty similar grammatically. French sounds much better to my ears, maybe the reason I don't speak Spanish well, while I have a huge vocabulary and have no problems understanding it. A pity Univision sucks so much. Choose the one you are more likely to be exposed to.

Hard to judge usefulness. I thought I could get a direct financial benefit, but it didn't happen. Helps to understand other cultures and when traveling.

The only reason english and french seem to be the most popular is that english is the most widely spoken and those darn french people won't learn to speak anything else!

French suuuckkks.

Just trust me. I was warned before taking it too, and I didn't listen. I regret that now.

Though I must admit a good teacher would help.

I don't know how anyone could think it sounds pretty with all of those "nasal vowels"..ugh.

I took a year each of the following, and would rate them in this order:
German > Spanish > French
Not that I had any problems learning any of them, I just didn't care for the french language.
