Do you think I should get a PS2 or PS3?

I have both a 360 and Wii and I love them both. For whatever reason (cheap college years, I suppose) I never got around to buying a PS2 even though I really liked my Xbox and Gamecube.

At some point I do want to go back and play the creme de la creme of the PS2 library and honestly I've been RPG/Adventure game hungry. So far the PS3 does not have a single game I would buy so far. I've had my fill of FPS recently so even Killzone doesn't excite me. "Infamous" looks like it might be up my alley, but we'll see.

I do have a backlog of games to play, but God of War II is calling! I've been blessed enough to be at the point where I can afford the PS3 without much issue but I'm wondering if it will be worth it just for the HD upscaling and future potential. Or should I just get the seemingly soon-to-be $99 PS2?

EDTI: Ah, I almost forgot - The main reason I'm considering this now instead of waiting for further PS3 price drops is that they're starting to remove the hardware backwards compatibility option, which would obviously be used in my case.

your post tells us exactly 0 reasons why you would even think about getting a PS3, yet it tells us quite a few why you would think about the PS2.

i think you answered your own question in your post.

Since you can afford the PS3, I vote for it. Here was my rationalization: I almost bought a PS2 because like yourself, I never had one and the price + GoW 1&2 seemed reason enough, without even considering any of the other vast number of games for it. But instead I waited for a PS3 deal, and so on top of the deal Amazon offered up, it saved me the difference in cost of what I could resell the PS2 for, as well. The Xbox and 360 games have kept me in gaming goodness enough to not mind waiting to play the PS2&3 games, and having a BR player, HDMI, and a model with the EE were just more incentive to go PS3 now.

Also, who knows wether or not Sony will goof up their SKUs and/or pricing later?

If you get a PS2 solely for RPGs, I can tell you right now you'll be occupied until the PS3 comes down to $300.

For somebody who hasn't played any of the PS2 RPGs, it'll literally take you years if you want to catch up on some of the great games that have come out for the system. I'll give you a great list to go off of:

FF series
Dragon Quest VIII
Disgaea I and II (RPG/RTS hybrid)
Shin Megami Tensei series (Nocturne was a great game, new title coming out soon)
Odin Sphere
Valkyrie Profile 2
Xenosaga series
Shadow Hearts series
Kingdom Hearts series
Magna Carta: Tears of Blood
Suikoden III

Some of the improvements in the original vs. upscaled graphics seem quite dramatic but other than that I suppose I have some of the "must have the latest and greatest" bug nagging at me.

Maybe I'll probably start looking for the best deal on a new PS2. It's amazing how well it's still selling, I guess there are plenty of others like me. Too bad it keeps the price up.

do some research and decide for yourself, if you have absolutely no interest in blu-ray movies or any of the games coming out in a reasonable amount of time(I say 1 year) then buy a ps2. if you do have any interest in the above then buy a ps3.

Ask yourself if $400 difference is worth it. Will you be using its extra features while you wait for games? Are you excited about Heavenly Sword (since you showed interest in God of War, similar game, due out in two months)? It just depends.

Do you plan to play Final Fantasy VII - IX and other PS1 classics? The BC in the current PS3 does list glitches with some PS1 games including some FFs. Some may have been fixed with firmware updates though.

PS3 BC database (might not reflect all firmware fixes):
US BC info

I'm still keeping my PS2 Slim, even though I have a PS3 and am happy with it, because of the better PS1 BC.

Pros for PS2:
- only $130 new, plus a couple of memory cards ($30?)
- supports Guitar Hero

Pros for PS3:
- no need for PS1 & PS2 memory cards, use the hard drive.
- blu-ray looks great on HDTVs, and netflix rents blu-ray.

Well remember the new 80GB PS3 has "limited" support for PS2/1 games. So either buy a 20/60GB PS3 or buy a cheap PS2. My PS2 was one of those that had the DRE problem and I haven't been able to play any games in a year and I was going to wait until I bought a PS3 but since they are phasing out the backwards compatibility, I am just going to buy a PS2.

I've got a slick PS2 all modded up - plays games from the 160GB hard drive among other things. If you decide to go the PS2 route, shoot me a PM!

You can buy a used PS2 for $60-80 shipped off the forums. You can buy about any game used from $5-$25 used. By the time you go through all the PS2 games you want to play PS3 will be $299 and you will likely have a newer rev that has most of the launch bugs worked out if any. I personally think it would be dumb to spend $499 on a system and just wear it out playing older games. By the time you go through all those games the PS3 will probably be on its last leg. Then theres that chance you will have to buy another once you get started on the PS3 titles.

I say get the PS2. Like someone said above, you'll be plenty busy catching up on all the great games for the PS2, that by the time you get bored/done, the PS3 will/should cheaper, and any BC issues should be ironed out for 98% of the games (I'd imagine, anyway). I say save the money, unless you are really wanting Blu-ray support and upconversion for PS2 games (which isn't a must-have IMO).
