Do you think drunk driving will ever cease to exist?

Unless they harshen the penalty for being caught dui, I don't see it stopping anytime soon.

Would a 30 day stay in jail be an ok punishment? And then a 180 day stay in jail if you were caught a second time?

What do you think? Would it stop YOU (if you drive drunk) from driving drunk?

Edit

Do you think it would lessen the amount of people who are arrested for dui?

1st offense: $1000 fine and suspended license for 1 year AND 30 days in jail
2nd offense: $2500 fine and suspended license for 2 years and 6 months in jail and forced rehab
3rd offense: $5000 fine and license revoked for LIFE and 5 years in prison.

Now, if any bodily harm or fatalities are involved, I think the punishment should be even more severe!

I whoreheartedly, concur. Sounds nice!

What, you think the prospect of killing themselves or others isn't going to stop them, but a lost license will? Yawn. If you're willing to drive drunk you're damn well willing to drive without a license. And fines are meaningless, there will always be a rich elite who don't care about fines and can pay a $10,000 ticket as easily as the rest of us pay a $10 parking ticket. As long as DUIs have the prospect of buying their way out with fines or going up against soft-hearted judges who are willing to give habitual drunks a 6th chance there's no incentive for them to change. The secret is prison time. Lots of it, no parole and no discretion for the judge to let people off with a slap. Drunk driving should be viewed as attempted murder, prosecuted as such and have sentences that fit.

Yeah to bad that time when I drive "drunk" since i blew a .08 after having a few glasses of wine with my significant other at a nice restaurant that I saved up a few weeks for... Now I'm completely broke, my kids/wife/family/friends/job are without me for 30 days, and I have no income since I'm in jail. And not to mention since my work required me to drive something I am promptly fired and in desperate need of employment. Next employer sees me as a criminal since I just got out of jail.

Lovely.

Raising the punishments don't always help. You could penalize drunk driving by death.. but people would still do it. Why? because they're drunk. I drink a lot and really try hard not to drive even if I know I'm still under the legal limit - but there's times when it is really hard to avoid.

Here in Gainesville (college town), all the cars get towed out of the parking lots near the bars if they're there for more than a day. Then, our buses only go until 2:30-3am when the bars are forced to close at 2am. So, even if you take a bus home to avoid driving while drunk, your car will probby get towed and cost you $70.

Perhaps in Gainesville if the buses ran a while longer (it often takes an hour just to file out of a crowded bar and make it to the bus stop), there would be fewer DUIs. Also, if they decided to build better parking infrastructure near the bars and clubs, parking wouldn't be so hideous and people could take the bus home and pick their cars up the next day without them being towed.

Often, one goes out to have a beer or two and doesn't plan on getting drunk. But, being a good party, friends, or whatever, one finds themself drunk. With the nazi towing almost anywhere here in Gainesville, it isn't exactly possible to leave your car or easy to get someone sober to drive your car home for you.

Why can't you take the bus to the bar in the first place, brxndxn? Seems like a logical conclusion, doesn't it?

Don't give me the BS about 3 AM being too early to stop running the buses. In dallas they basically end at 11:30 PM. I'm fortunate enough to have a 3 AM system here and it makes me much happier. If you can't find your way to the bus stop by 3 when they stop serving at 2, you are pretty much a fvcking moron.

Sure those reason are all good and fine but they are all avoidable. You can call a cab instead of taking a bus. Not drive to the bar in the first place if you plan on drinking... etcetc. Sure, your points are valid but they aren't exactly an excuse.

How about in a bigger urban area like NYC, Chicago, or the Bay Area? I know most people don't have too much trouble with drunk driving in NYC thanks to the Subway and buses. And there are parking structures galore... I know a lot of people who still appoint a designated driver or just have some self-control and stop drinking before they get drunk. I'm sure most sane people will understand that you don't wanna drive drunk.

What about capital punishment? Have murder rates fallen in those states with the death sentence handy?

Yes. The fix is technological. Eventually cars will have the ability to drive themselves, and could be made to take over or prohibit operation in case of an intoxicated driver.
