Do you talk to telemarketers or hang up on them?

I can tell it's a telemarketer when I pick up the phone and say, "Hello?" and there's a couple second pause before they reply. Then I say "He's not here" and hang up.

I feel guilty just hanging up on somebody. They are just trying to make a paycheck. I get more calls from bill collectors than telemarketers.😱

Anyone who votes yes to the 2nd question should be shot out of a cannon into the sun because they are the reason telemarketers exist.

I wouldn't say I talk to them. I just wait til they get to a break point and say "I"m not interested" and then I hang up.

The pause is from the predictive dialer determining that there is a live body on the line and then transferring the call to a waiting marketer.

If you want to stop getting telemarketing calls, instruct the marketer to "please take me off your list." This is a legally-binding oral contract (by federal law, it applies even in states that do not recognize oral contracts). That company may not call you again without facing civil penalty (provided that you keep a record of the calls and file a complaint with the FTC or your state AG if they do call you again).

Telling the marketer that "he's not here" guarantees that they will call you again. The marketer will select "Not available, call back later" in the computer before moving onto his next call. The computer will then schedule the dialer to call again at a different time.

edit: and to answer the OP's poll, I have never purchased anything from a telemarketer.

I do this although don't give them the "hold on." I just wait till they start reciting their gimmick and put the phone down.

Ah so that's why there is a pause. I've wondered why.

Yeah I should tell them to take the name off the list. This only happens when I'm at my parent's house, I don't get these calls on my cell phone.

neither of your poll options ...

i say "Hello" then usually hear nothing back, and I say "Hello" again and can usually hear them then connect and they say something, then I say "Hello" again and then hang up on them, like I never heard em.

I actually like getting thoes calls and wrong numbers to mess with them.

I love it when a guy calls asking for a girl and tell them she just left with her boyfriend.

Then one I rember was a carpet cleaning company. I told them I couldnt believe what luck for them to call me. My girlfriend and I just got into a fight and there is blood everywhere. I think she is dead. Shes just laying there and there is all the blood on my carpet and all over my house. Can you come over right away? I will have the body removed by the time you get here but I need all the blood taken out before the cops show.

After that they hung up and another call came and I got the "manager" and told them they had the wrong number 🙂

I have a few on mini tape I have done with a phone I bought to record the calls just for the fun factor. Keep in mind this was like back when I was 18-19 and dont do it as often now.

I do a really good Beavis from 'Beavis and Butthead'.

My responses are like, "what are you wearing", "whoa, it's a chick calling me", "dude, you're such a fart knocker, that thing sucks", "uh, what's a credit card. can't I use yours?"

I make them hang up before I do.

At least say you are not interested. Common courtesy.

and then they keep trying to sell it to you anyway.

Then they can talk to an empty telephone because after you say not interested, hanging up is not necessarily rude.

LOL what cartoon showed the telemarketers in their cubicles like crying when someone hanged up? Simpsons?

I have Caller ID. If the screen shows "Out of Area," I presume that it's a telemarketer and don't even bother picking up the phone. My presumption is usually further supported when the caller hangs up when my answering machine comes on.
