I've been seeing this more and more lately, do people say this consciously or is it slang or what? Why not just say "shirt needs ironing" or "shirt needs *to be* ironed" correctly?

I first saw this online and thought it was just a typo, now I'm seeing it more and more, what the hell kinda slang is that? Sorry, me being a New Englander, I don't undertand it

Yeah, its common here in the Midwest. I used to talk like that, because that's how everyone, including teachers, talked when I was growing up. I've since learned that it is incorrect, and have to make myself insert the "to be" into the sentence.
