2 schools of thought:

1) I respond right away and he can see I'm very responsive and hard working

2) I respond later to show him I'm busy with much to do in my day.

I sometimes manage my stuff in a way that quickie things take precendence even if I'm in the middle of another "project". I take the 5-10-15 minutes and respond and do what's necessary right away. Does this make it seem like I have nothing to do in my boss' eyes?

I try and always respond quickly because my boss knows how much of an unorganized procrastinator I am.

It also depends on how urgent it is, if they're pissed off or not, or if it's something that can wait.

But I always try and respond ASAP if possible.

If it's my boss, then I take my sweet time. He's a busy man, and assumes I am too. If it's my boss' boss, then I do it immediately.

Same here.

P.S. I got to shake hands with the CEO of Home Depot ( where I work ). He then went on to shake more hands. I asked one of his anterage (sp?) what he was doing to fix the problems that HD is having, and he said, "Just wait great things are coming". Ya right. Like firing everyone and replacing them with bean curd. I know it.

Always immediate responses.

Ditto whenever possible.

My boss and my boss' boss both know that I am busy. But I made it clear since Day One that I am never too busy to accomodate their needs, no matter what is going on. (Squeak, squeak, squeak! ;)) Unless I'm working on something that is totally on fire, I'll drop what I'm doing in order to get done whatever it is that they need me to do. They are important people. I tell them so. ;) I have no problem getting time off, leaving early or other favors. [yoda]Luke, you must use The Force to stuff your nose up the rear of your boss![yoda]

Kissing @ss doesn't do it all though, being RESULTS-driven and loyal are other important traits.

It depends which boss is making the request. I literally seem to have four bosses that I report to. Usually, I try to take both of your approaches, so they're pleasantly surprised when they get it quickly or not to disappointed when it takes a while.

I respond to emails immediately, regardless of who they're from. But in general when my boss makes a request of me I attend to it as soon as possible, unless he's done something to piss me off. Then I take my time.

I don't... I figure if I don't ever respond to email they will get the message and stop sending it.
