The only "true" antianxiety agent is Buspirone. The ones you're thinking of are most likely benzodiazepines, which are only good for short term management. SSRIs are also used in management of anxiety. Also SNRIs such as venlafaxine.

Is Buspirone an over the counter or prescription drug?

My wife takes Paxil, and Klonopin.... they work quite well...

She used to take doxepin, and others, but the paxil works wonders.

I took xanax for awhile while dealing with my divorce - only way I could get any sleep.
Not for about a year now, so I voted no.

edit: I think they were 0.5mg - at worst I was taking 1 a day - occasionally two on a bad day. No withdrawal or any other problems

I went to my doctor a month ago because I've had difficulty being able to sleep soundly. I seem to wake up every 2 or 3 hours. She gave me a prescription for benzodiazepin. Taken 30 minutes before bedtime, and I took them as prescribed. My pills ran out and it was a week before I could see my Doctor again. In the week without the pills, it was living hell. Shakes, fast heartrate, sweating, confusion... Basically, in just a matter of 3 weeks on benzodiazepin, my body became addicted, thus the week withdrawl symptoms were brutal. I never thought I would ever become addicted to anything so quickly.. I was wrong. I'm completely off them now, but it was not a easy path.

I was on meds for almost 10 yrs. About 11 different kinds. Every time I fell flat on one they would give me another to try. Thing is... not ever pill works for everyone... and every pill take a long time to tell if it will work for that person. So, I spent long periods of my life over a lot of years being a total fvcking wackjob. At one point, I ended up in the ER with convulsions and massive nosebleeds.

Finally, I just went back to Paxil and slowly weened myself off. It took me almost 8 months to get clean, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. But I have no had anything for about 2yrs now.

I still get my mood swings and my irrational insanities,... but i have learned to read the signs and either brace myself and wait for them to pass, or I just ignore them and warn the b/f that I will be unreasonable for a few days.

No, but I think I may need them. Can't sleep, worry all the time. Work Work Work. Money, Family Kids, It's crushing me. I've made an appointment to see my Primary Care, may need a refferal to a shrink. Been thinking about this alot lately.

Why do you take them OP?
