My son has it real bad. I was told when he was a year and a half old that he would likely have it.

Thanks in part to his medication, he's done pretty well, and going into the eighth grade soon.

Add/ADHD is like any other medical conditon, some have it worse than others. No doubt lots of people get meds for it that can do fine without them, but for some, it really helps.

Hmm, I have always thought that I may have it.

Do you guys think 23 is too old to get diagnosed and treated?

No. In fact it should make the diagnosis both easier and more certain. Adult ADD is somewhat rare, and it's a little easier to check for the symptoms simply because adults think and express themselves differently than kids.

I have ADHD. Sometimes when I get to talking I just.....

Oh look...another thread!!

Actually, my son and I have Asperger's Syndrome which is sometime misdiagnosed as ADD/ADHD. No meds, but life for my wife and other kids is kinda rough because of the issues that it creates.

Yeah, my best friend from about 5th grade to high school has it, and was indeed misdiagnosed with ADD. (Of course, the diagnosis wasn't available until, what, '95?) I'm remarkably adept at spotting the little "tells" that come with the disease now; pretty much every time I think, "that guy really reminds me of James," it's someone who has it.

While I'm sure there is some very small minority with true ADHD, most people just use it as an excuse because they "rack disciprine!"

for instance, i tried to play guitar. i couldn't get it at all, so i just quit. ended up selling my gear to a friend.

i don't know if thats any form of add or just being bored/frustrated.
Are you fvcking serious??

I don't have ADHD, but have been diagnosed with other things. I am much better now then I was in the past, but wish there was a silver bullet that would cure me completely.

That's a South Park reference if that's not what you're getting.

I think people underestimate the amount of legitimate cases of ADD. Through my search for a holistic solution, I found that many studies have indicated that a lack of DHA (an omega 3 fat) in early childhood increases the liklihood of neurological disorders. It's not something you can completely fix after your childhood is over.

Our brain is mostly made out of these fats, but hardly anyone gets them anymore. A healthy mother's breast milk contains it, but not many mothers are healthy. It's not something the human body can produce. Our ancestors got it from meat and fish. You can still get it from wild fish, that's why they're so healthy. But it used to be common in wild game and to a lesser extent cattle and chicken. But our farming methods have changed. Instead of letting cattle graze natural sources of food, we lock them up in pens, inject them with hormones, and force feed them unnatural sources of food. The result is the absence of DHA, and a more signficant amount of saturated fat. That's why whole fat coventional meat has become so bad for you.

Bah! Fine.

1) ADD is real. Unless you have a medical degree, STFU and stop trying to say it isn't.
2) ADD is often overdiagnosed because lots of things can cause ADD symptoms
2a) ADD is also overdiagnosed because of "helicopter parents"
3) I have ADD
4) If you STILL don't believe in ADD, I have behavioral issues which are reduced/eliminated by medication. By definition that makes it a real disorder. Jackass.

Cliffs?

I don't think a lot of people really understand what Ritalin and its derivatives do. Most medications for AD(/H)D are very strong stimulants. They are designed to compensate for neurological problems, not to drag down your energy level or to mellow you out. For me, the medications really help to be able to concentrate on a problem and more importantly, actively work on it until its conclusion. The fact that when you give these stimulants to hyper kids and see how they calm down and focus themselves gives a strong nod to notion that there is more to ADD than being just some condition made up by the drug companies.
